I love anything that makes life easier — but I certainly don’t like paying extra for convenience.
So instead, I MOO as much as possible.

One of the simplest ways I make dessert quick, easy and budget-friendly is with MOO Crumble Kits.

Years ago, dessert after dinner was quite normal. It wasn’t just a treat — it was a clever way to stretch the grocery budget. Desserts were usually made from inexpensive ingredients like fruit, oats and flour, leaving the grocery money for the more expensive parts of the meal.

Even now, I like to keep desserts simple and homemade. Things like:
• Apple or rhubarb crumble
• Peach cobbler
• Fruit pies
• Lemon delicious
• Baked rice custard
• Steamed puddings
Served with custard or cream (or both, in Wayne’s case!).

Why Crumble Kits Are So Handy
Making crumble from scratch is easy, but having the dry mix ready to go makes it even easier.
When I want dessert I simply:
1. Take fruit from the pantry, freezer or fridge
2. Grab a crumble kit
3. Melt some butter
4. Sprinkle the topping over the fruit
5. Bake

That’s it.
A crumble can be in the oven in under five minutes, which is perfect for busy nights.
I usually make crumble in a large baking dish. One dish gives us enough for two nights of dessert and a few lunches — about 14 serves. Leftovers go into a container in the fridge and reheat beautifully in the microwave.

Great for Camping Too
Crumble kits are also fantastic for camping.
I make them up in large ziplock bags so they store flat in the tucker box.
When it’s time for dessert, I simply add fruit — stewed apples, tinned peaches or apricots, rhubarb, or whatever we have — then mix in melted butter and cook it in the camp oven.
If there’s space in the freezer, we sometimes even have ice-cream with camp oven crumble!

MOO Crumble Kits
Add the following to a large ziplock bag:
1 cup rolled oats
¾ cup plain flour
¾ cup brown sugar (packed)
¾ cup coconut
1 teaspoon mixed spice
Seal the bag and store in the pantry.

Instructions to Write on the Bag
To Make a Crumble
1. Melt 125g butter
2. Add to dry ingredients and mix well
3. Spread evenly over fruit
4. Bake 30–40 minutes until topping is golden and fruit is bubbling

Make Ahead & Storage
I usually make a dozen crumble kits at a time and store them in the pantry. Without the butter added they are shelf stable for months.
If you prefer, you can mix the crumble topping with melted butter and freeze the kits. This prevents the butter from going rancid.
To use a frozen crumble kit, simply remove it from the freezer and let it sit for a few minutes. Then crumble or grate the topping over the fruit and bake as usual, adding 5–10 minutes to the cooking time.

Another simple way to Make Our Own, save money and keep homemade desserts easy.
Small homemade swaps.
Big long-term savings.
