A Gorgeous Tea Cup Pin Cushion
This is a beautiful way to upcycle your vintage tea cups that you don't use for, well, tea.
The original idea came from our old forum, way back in 2012, and the first one I made was gift for Hannah's (at the time) Home Ec teacher.
To make the pin cushion I hunted around and found a pretty tea cup at the op shop for the grand sum of $1.50, used fabric and stuffing from my stash and the whole gift was very affordable. (And Mrs. A. loved it).
I always browse the china when I'm op shopping, and while prices are creeping up, there are still bargains to be had. Tea cups and saucers can be found for $2 up, and they make lovely pin cushions.
You will need:
1 vintage tea cup (and saucer if you have it)
a piece of fabric about 3 times the size of the top of the tea cup
wadding or other stuffing
a glue gun or sticky glue
ribbon, lace, tape measure etc. for trim - can use whatever sewing theme items you have i.e. buttons, cotton reels etc.
Step 1. Measure the fabric and cut into a circle roughly 3 times the size of the top of the cup and cut it out. Sew a line of running stitch around the edge of the material about 1.5cm in.
Step 2. Put a pile of wadding in the centre of the fabric and pull the running stitch up tight to make a ball. Run a line of hot glue around the inside edge of the cup and stick the fabric ball into it to make the pincushion.
Step 3. If you have a saucer glue the cup to the saucer. I like to use E6000 glue to do this, it is very strong, waterproof and forms a bond quickly. Now let your imagination run riot with the ribbon, lace etc.
Finish the pin cushion off with some pearl head pins and perhaps a pair of stork scissors (you can find knock-offs quite cheap at Spotlight and Lincraft) tied to the handle with a pretty ribbon.
