Tip Store: Groceries: Aldi

Sweet Savings on Chilli Sauce

Approximate $ Savings: $1.33 per unit

We go through quite a bit of sweet chilli sauce, which we buy by the 730 ml bottle from Ald, under the label 'Mae Ploy'. It costs us $2.29 a bottle, a saving of $1.33 per bottle over Woolworths, who sell the same brand for $3.62 per bottle. That is a massive saving of almost 60%. The Aldi price is the same country wide, but the Woolworths price may vary from store to store, normally more expensive rather than cheaper, depending on the opposition locally.

Delectable Budget Tipple

Approximate $ Savings: $5 per bottle

No great tip, just extremely drinkable (table)wine called 'Promised Earth' from Aldi for $3 per bottle. Chardonnay only. Great for every day drinking wine or to serve at barbeques, even to take a bottle when dining out.

Tip Top Tuna

Aldi's tinned tuna was today identified at being 1/3 of the cost of Greenseas Tinned Tuna in Brine at 85c a can, compared to $3.19 at Coles or Woolies, and was also healthier as it is lower in sodium. Great for lunch boxes or in tuna pasta bakes or Tuna Crunch, which my kids love!

Aldi Powdered Milk Great for Baking, Saves Money Too

Approximate $ Savings: 80+

On the price paid today at Aldi for 5kg powered full cream milk. The money saved in baking alone is as above. The price of 1 Lt. made up is .684c. Made the night before and refrigerated it is accepted by all in this house as a.o.k. for all other uses milk it put to. As a total replacement for bottled milk in an average family, even the pets, the savings would be: $ price of your milk per Lt. -.684 = x the number of Lt. used per year I'm so excited as the savings are becoming more important and apparent to me. We, the family, has a huge goal in mind and we will make it.

Basic Breads at Budget Prices

Aldi sell white sandwich and toast sliced bread for .99 cents a loaf. Wholemeal are priced around $1.40 and their packs of English muffins come in at around $1.50 for 8 instead of around $3.00 for 6 at any of the major supermarkets.

Fantastic Meat Bargains

I love Aldi prices for groceries but recently I have been buying my meat there too. It's been getting more and more expensive at the butchers (up to $28/kg for steak and $9.99/kg for legs of lamb). The prices are excellent - $5.49/kg for legs of lamb, $5.99/kg for mince, $5.49/kg for corned silverside, $8.99 for No. 20 fresh chickens and $7.99/kg for bacon. For my family these are excellent prices and for me it's easier to pick all the shopping up in one hit. One thing I have noticed is that my local Aldi marks down the meat first thing Friday morning, often by up to $3 a packet. Yesterday I picked up fresh chickens for $5 each, packs of mince (minimum weight 1.8kg) for $5.99 each, porterhouse steaks for $5 per pack. I bought everything that was marked down. It all had at least two days before the Use by date was up. Now my freezer is stocked with enough meat to last us for at least 7 weeks (50 serves of meat or chicken). I am so happy with these bargains and I have put the savings straight into the money tin for Christmas.
