Welcome to Christmas in July: A Calm, Budget-Friendly Christmas Starts Here
Christmas has a funny way of sneaking up on us.
It arrives on the same date every year, and yet somehow December can still feel like a surprise. The gifts, the food, the wrapping, the cards, the visitors, the outings, the extra groceries, the postage, the fuel, the “just in case” purchases — it all adds up very quickly.
And if we’re not careful, Christmas can become less about joy and more about juggling.
Juggling the budget.
Juggling expectations.
Juggling time.
Juggling the grocery bill.
Juggling the credit card and hoping January will somehow sort itself out.
That is not the Cheapskates way.
Here at the Cheapskates Club, we believe Christmas can be generous without being expensive. It can be joyful without being stressful. It can be thoughtful without being last-minute. And it can absolutely be paid for before the leftovers are finished.
That is why we’re starting Christmas in July.
Why Christmas in July?
A calm, organised, budget-focused Christmas starts long before December.
This 31-day Christmas in July challenge is designed to help you prepare gently, one small step at a time. We are not rushing the year. We are not putting up the tree in July. We are not adding more pressure to your already busy life.
We are simply giving ourselves time.
Time to plan ahead.
Time to set a realistic Christmas budget.
Time to make gifts.
Time to prepare pantry treats.
Time to shop wisely.
Time to use what we already have.
Time to spread the cost.
Time to avoid the December panic.
When we start now, we get five lovely months to make Christmas fit our lives, our homes and our budgets.
That is a much nicer option than trying to squeeze Christmas into the last two frantic paydays of the year.
What This Challenge Is About
This challenge is not about creating a perfect Christmas.
Perfect Christmases are exhausting. They usually involve too much spending, too much cooking, too much comparison and at least one person muttering darkly while trying to untangle fairy lights.
This challenge is about creating a calm Christmas.
A paid-for Christmas.
A thoughtful Christmas.
A Christmas that suits your family.
A Christmas that uses what you already have.
A Christmas with gifts chosen or made with care.
A Christmas with food people actually enjoy.
A Christmas that does not follow you into January as a money hangover.
Each day during July, we’ll focus on one small, practical Christmas task. Some days will be about the budget. Some will be about gifts. Some will be about food, pantry planning, cooking, making, wrapping, traditions or using up what is already in the cupboard.
Nothing will be complicated. Nothing will require a huge spend. Nothing will expect you to suddenly become a Christmas elf with unlimited time and a craft room the size of a warehouse.
We are doing this the Cheapskates way: simply, sensibly, cheerfully and within budget.
Who This Challenge Is For
This Christmas in July challenge is for every Cheapskater who wants Christmas to feel easier this year.
It is for families trying to stretch every dollar.
It is for retirees on fixed incomes.
It is for singles and couples who still want Christmas to feel special.
It is for cooks, crafters, preservers and makers.
It is for busy people who need a plan before December gets silly.
It is for anyone who wants to enjoy Christmas without overspending.
It is for anyone who has ever reached January and thought, “Never again.”
Whether you love Christmas or secretly find it overwhelming, you are welcome here.
We will take it one day at a time.
What We’ll Cover During the 31 Days
Over the month, we’ll work through a simple and practical Christmas plan.
We’ll look at:
• Setting a realistic Christmas budget
• Working out what Christmas really costs
• Creating a gift list that protects your purse
• Starting a present box or present cupboard
• Making thoughtful handmade gifts
• Preparing pantry gifts, jars, relishes and baking
• Planning Christmas food without blowing the grocery budget
• Making cards, tags and wrapping from what you already have
• Building a Christmas cash stash
• Shopping from home before shopping in stores
• Creating low-cost family traditions
• Planning for visitors
• Avoiding last-minute spending traps
• Making Christmas feel generous without making it expensive
By the end of July, you won’t have Christmas completely finished — and you don’t need to.
But you will have a plan.
You will know what needs doing.
You will know what you can afford.
You will know what you already have.
You will know what you can make.
You will know what needs to be bought slowly over the next few months.
And that makes all the difference.

The Cheapskates Christmas Rule
This year, let’s remember one simple rule:
Christmas is not an emergency
t comes every year.
It comes on the same date.
And with a little planning, it does not need to derail the budget.
We do not need to spend money we do not have to prove we care.
We do not need to cook food nobody really wants.
We do not need to buy decorations because a catalogue told us this year’s colour theme has changed.
We do not need to say yes to everything.
We do not need to make Christmas bigger than our budget.
We can choose a Christmas that is calm, warm, generous and realistic.
That is more than enough.
Your First Step
Before Day 1 begins, choose somewhere to keep your Christmas notes.
It might be a notebook, a folder, a binder, a spreadsheet, a note on your phone, or a few printed pages in a plastic sleeve. Use whatever works for you.
Label it:
Christmas 2026
Then write this at the top of the first page:
This Christmas will be calm, joyful and paid for.
That is our starting point.
