How an Apron Can Save You Money
Retro is in so wearing an apron is no longer (supposedly) a sign of female oppression; it's a fashion statement! And it is one fashion statement that can save you money.
If you believe aprons belong in the 1950's along with the house-proud stay-at-home wife and mother wearing pearls and high heels forget it. Every Cheapskate household should have aprons available for everyone to wear.
I've always worn an apron in the house, a habit I get from my mother. I can't remember Mum not wearing an apron in the kitchen or when she was cleaning and working around the house and I suspect my children will say the same thing about me, too.
The simple act of putting an apron adjusts your attitude almost immediately. Aprons are the symbol of the hard working and it is really hard not to be “domestic” when you are wearing an apron. Once you have that apron on you are in work mode.

Just the action of putting it on changes the way you look at what you do around your home. Take meal preparation for example. Calling for home delivery pizza seems pointless when you have your apron on. You can whip up your own pizza without messing up your clothes in less time than it takes to have it delivered. You'll save at least $5.00 per pizza if you buy the bargain priced $6.50 pizzas.
Psychologically when I have an apron on I'm ready to cook and clean. Cooking and baking is easier with an apron on. I don't have to worry about keeping my clothes clean and I have somewhere to wipe my hands.
There's nothing worse than getting an oil stain or a chocolate or tomato stain on a favourite top or jumper. They are hard to shift and if you don't notice them can be a permanent grey spot that stands out like a sore thumb. An apron protects your clothing.

Keeping your clothes clean means you can get more than one wear out of a garment (only if they're clean, I don't suggest you re-wear dirty, smelly clothes). By not washing as often the garment has less wear and tear. Even the most gentle of washing machine cycles is quite rough with your clothes so the less they tumble, toss and spin the longer they will last. That's another way wearing an apron saves you money.
If you don't believe me, borrow an apron and give it a try. You will find that cleaning the bathroom will somehow seem easier. Washing dishes and cleaning the fridge out will be chores that are quickly finished.
An apron specifically for cleaning can have pockets for dusters, polish, sponges etc. If you have your cleaning tools at your fingertips you won't be running back to the cleaning cupboard for things you've forgotten. I know it will keep you focussed on the job at hand, if I have to stop to go get another rag I usually get sidetracked and the cleaning is forgotten!

Having a gardening apron is a great idea. If you make or find one with lots of pockets you can carry your gloves, water bottle, trowel and so one with you. If you do make one, try to make it out of a heavy denim or canvas so it's tough enough to stand up to the rigors of gardening – the pulling, the mud and the wiping of dirty hands.
If you don't own any, they really are quick and easy to make. You can buy them too, from homeware shops or Spotlight. Just be prepared though. The price may be enough to give you cardiac arrest. I've seen aprons for as much as $29.95!
Most high school home economics classes teach how to make a simple apron. It's really just a rectangle of material, hemmed at the bottom with ties at the top. You can make an apron from a metre of cotton fabric in about half an hour.
The power of an apron is amazing; if you're not convinced, get some fabric, make yourself one and try it, I know you'll see the difference an apron can make.
