How to Build Your Stockpile Part 1

The Super Shopper way – updated for 2026

"Stockpile -
A supply stored for future use, usually carefully accrued and maintained"

If you’ve spent any time in the Cheapskates Club community, you’ve probably heard me talk about our grocery stockpile. And if you’re new — especially if you’ve joined the Super Shopper Challenge — you might be wondering exactly what that means in real life.

How big is a stockpile?
How long does it take to build?
What do you stockpile — and what don’t you?
Where do you store it all?
How much does it cost?
And most importantly… how do you actually use it?

They’re all excellent questions, and over the next few weeks I’ll be answering them step by step in this How to Build Your Stockpile series. This first part is about mindset, expectations, and starting gently — because a stockpile should make life easier, not more complicated.

A stockpile is meant to be used
Let’s get one thing clear straight away: there is no point having cupboards full of food you don’t eat.
A Cheapskates stockpile is practical. It’s built around the foods you actually use, the meals you actually cook, and the rhythms of your household. It exists so you can save money, reduce stress, and keep feeding your family well — even when prices rise, weeks get busy, or life throws a curveball.
If you never rotate through it, it’s not a stockpile. It’s clutter.

Why groceries can feel more expensive at first
When people first start living the Cheapskates way, supermarket spending often goes up before it comes down. That can feel alarming — but it’s completely normal.

Why? Because many households are starting with very little in the pantry. Convenience foods, takeaway, and “grab something on the way home” habits are being replaced with raw ingredients and basic staples. You’re not just buying food for this week — you’re building a foundation.

At the same time, you’re learning new cooking habits, trying Make Our Own recipes, and figuring out what works for your family. All of that takes a little time and a little patience.
Stick with it. The shift happens.

The turning point
Once your pantry is established, something wonderful happens:
• Grocery spending evens out
• You shop less often
• Meals become easier to plan
• Waste drops dramatically
• Stress around “what’s for dinner?” fades

You’ll notice you can skip a shop if you need to. You’ll start buying ahead when prices are good. You’ll have options — and options equal power over your grocery budget.

That’s the beginning of a true stockpile.

Stockpiling is a slow build (and that’s a good thing)
It might sound tempting to do one massive shop and come home with months of groceries. In reality, that rarely works well.
A stockpile needs:
• Time to build
• Space to store
• A plan to rotate and use everything

Instead, start small and steady.

Each time you shop, add one or two extra basics to your list:
• An extra packet of pasta
• A spare bag of rice
• An additional tin of tomatoes
• One more box of cereal

These small additions don’t strain the budget, but over time they add up.

Set gentle milestones
Rather than aiming for a “perfect” stockpile, aim for breathing room.
• First goal: enough food to skip one week of shopping
• Next goal: two weeks
• Then a month
• Eventually: up to three months of regularly used items

There’s no prize for going faster. Go at the pace that feels comfortable for your household and your budget.

Your stockpile will look different to mine
This is important: there is no universal stockpile list.

What you stockpile depends on:
• How many people you feed
• Dietary needs
• Cultural food preferences
• Cooking habits
• Storage space

Your stockpile might lean heavily on baking supplies. Someone else’s might be mostly freezer meals. Another household might focus on lunchbox snacks or pantry proteins.

Just like your Emergency Fund, your stockpile should fit your life, not someone else’s photos.

Shop at home first
Once your stockpile is established, the supermarket stops being the centre of your food system.

You plan meals from what you already have.

You use supermarkets to replace stockpile items — not to decide what you eat.

You buy because it’s needed or well-priced, not because you’re desperate.

That’s when grocery shopping becomes calmer, cheaper, and far less frequent.

This is just the beginning
In Part 2, I’ll share practical, hands-on tips to help you get your stockpile started the Super Shopper way — including what to prioritise first and how to avoid common mistakes.

Remember: you’re not behind. You’re starting where you are — and that’s exactly right.
