The Best Veggie Scrubbers Ever
I've just spent half an hour washing and scrubbing 10 kilos of brushed potatoes. Why? Well because they were very dirty, and they were cheap, which had me thinking they were probably very old, and so prone to going off quickly. Best to get them sorted and cleaned and stored properly so they'd last.
I filled the basin with cool water (don't use your sink, you'll end up sending a LOT of mud down the drain and you don't want to do that) and then I grabbed my MOO veggie scrubber and went to town.
As I was scrubbing it occurred to me that I've never shared this veggie scrubber with you, and it is fabulous, and quick and easy to make, for just a few cents.
I've used scrubby yarn, and my favourite Bernat Handicrafter 100% cotton yarn. This combination makes the absolute best veggie scrubber, gentle on your hands but tough enough to really scrub those veggies clean.
Best of all, they only use very small amounts of yarn, perfect for using up those odd ends of cotton.
These scrubbies are a simple rectangle, so really easy to crochet, even a beginner can whip up a veggie scrubby in no time. The rectangle gives you plenty of scrubby to really get those veggies clean, and being soft and pliable, they easily get into some of those knobbly bits on potatoes and odd shaped veggies and fruits.
It's a double layer, strong and enduring, tough enough to get all the dirt off those fruits and veg, soft enough to not tear up your hands and fingers.
And when you're finished, just toss the scrubby in the washing machine to clean it!
You will need:
6.5 mm Crochet hook
Red Heart Scrubby Yarn
Bernat Handicrafter100% cotton yarn
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Scissors
Stitches Used:
(ch) chain
(hdc) half double crochet
(sl st) slip stitch
Chain 16.
Row 1: Hdc into the 2nd chain from the hook and each chain across. (15)
Row 2: Ch 1. Turn. Hdc in the same stitch and each stitch across. (15)
Row 3-8: Repeat row 2. (15)
Row 9: Starting with this row, pick up the Scrubby yarn along with the cotton yarn and crochet with both together. Ch 1. Turn. Hdc in the same stitch and each stitch across (15).
Row 10-16: Repeat row 9. (15) After completing the 16th row, finish off the Scrubby yarn and weave in ends (or wait to weave in at the end). Leave the cotton yarn on your hook for the next step.
Putting it together: Fold work into half, so that there are two layers of cloth, with the scrubby side facing out.
Ch 1. Starting at the corner where your chain is, with the scrubby side facing away from you, crochet your edges together with single crochet, stitching evenly along the edge. Make sure to go through both sides with the hook. When you get to the first corner, single crochet 3 in the corner. Count the number of stitches on this first edge so that you can be sure to use the same number of stitches on the opposite edge.
The next edge is not an open edge, but in order to maintain a clean line around the entire scrubby, go ahead and single crochet across the edge. Count your stitches on this edge as well so that you can be sure to use the same number of stitches on the opposite edge.
3 single crochet at the next corner. Single crochet evenly up the third side. 3 single crochet in the corner. Single crochet the last edge together, ending with 2 single crochet in the 4th corner (the first single crochet for that corner was your first single crochet of the border). Slip stitch to the first sc. Finish off and weave in ends.
This gives a lovely, neat, finish to your veggie scrubby.
