The Great Apple Pie Spice Rip-Off
Ingredients give you options, including the option to MOO apple pie spice and save $127.75 per kilo!
My brain almost imploded when I was reading the Aldi specials catalogue and saw that this coming Wednesday, 25th June, they will have apple pie spice on sale.
Nothing wrong with that, um, other than the price!
Little jars for $3.99 - for 31 grams!
I did some quick sums (so grateful I was always good at mental math in school) and worked out that comes out to $129 per kilo!
A quick look at the ingredients and the jar clearly says "a balanced blend of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice". And the ingredients listed are just three: cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.
So I went to my trusty spice supplier and did some research.
From Hindustan Imports I can buy:
Those quantities make a LOT of apple pie spice, 3 kilos, and still comes in $45.35 under the single kilo price if you buy it from Aldi.
So to make a balanced blend of these spices, 1 worked on 1:1:1 ratio it would cost 83 cents (no you're not seeing things and I haven't miscalculated) to make 30 grams of apple pie spice.
Of course if you're not a huge baker and don't use a lot of spices, then you won't want to buy a kilo of each spice, so here are the costings for 100g packets (the smallest bulk packs I can get).
So for 30 grams of apple pie spice, the cost is $1.25, a saving of $2.74!
Before you even think about putting apple pie spice (or any other spice mix) in your trolley, take a look in your spice cabinet and check what ingredients you have on hand. Compare those to the listed ingredients on the jars or packets, and MOO your own.
Not sure you can do that? Check out the spice mixes in the Recipe File, and keep more money in your grocery budget.
