With winter on its way, this is a great project you can whip up while you're watching the footy on the weekend. Don't watch the football? No problem, a couple of nights in front of the fire (or TV) and you'll have a cosy pair of fingerless gloves to keep your hands warm, and your fingers free.

The pattern is so simple even a beginner knitter will be able to knit a pair (or two or three or four or more) of these nifty little mittens in next to no time.

You will need:
8 ply yarn
1 pair 4mm knitting needles.

Instructions:
Cast on 40 stitches.
First row: k2, p2, continue to end.
Continue in ribbing for 7.5cm (approximately 3 inches).
Next row: knit , increasing 4 stitches evenly across the row, (44sts).
Next row: purl to end.
Continue in stocking stitch until mittens measure approximately 20cm.
Next row: k2, p2, continue to end
Work 4 rows in rib.
Cast off in rib, leaving a 20cm tail of yarn.

To finish:  sew the mitten along the side seam using the tail of yarn at the ends of your mitten, leaving a hole for the thumb to poke through. Weave ends of yarn in to complete.

Make another mitten the same.

You can use any knitting yarn, but pure wool is nice and will keep your hands warm, even if they are damp.
Only a small amount of yarn is needed, so these mittens are great for using up scraps.

This pattern is for a medium sized ladies hand. For a man's hand, adjust the stitch count by casting on 52 stitches, then follow the pattern.
