August 2015 Tip Sheet

How to Make a Clove Pomander

In my mother's house you'd open a cupboard or wardrobe door and catch a sweet, spicy scent. That fragrance came from pomanders she had made from oranges or grapefruit and whole cloves. She would cover an orange or grapefruit with whole cloves, set it aside to dry for a couple of weeks and then place the pomanders in the wardrobe or cupboard to keep the contents fresh and sweet smelling.

I loved studding oranges with cloves when I was little, making patterns and feeling oh so proud when "my" pomander was promoted to the linen cupboard or my wardrobe.

The fashion of pomanders seems to have disappeared but they are so easy to make, work beautifully as air fresheners either in cupboards or on display in your home and they make beautiful gifts.
