Sesame Seed Saver

If you use sesame seeds, try to buy bread with sesame seed on it. It is added goodness for no extra cost and all the seeds that fall off the bread in the bag can be used in meals.

Marked Down Bread!

Approximate $ Savings: $1.50 per loaf

We have found that our local Woolworths discounts their bread late on Saturday afternoon. We have got loaves for 86c and Vienna loaves for 66c. We buy quite a few and freeze them. This is a saving of up to $1.50 per loaf! Bargain!

Day Old Bread and Cakes

Buy day old bread, pizza rounds, cakes and scones. My baker sales them reduced by 75%. The date scones and pizza rounds actually taste better.

Smaller Loaves Save Money

We waste a lot of bread in our house. I buy bakery bread for $2.85 a loaf. I keep my bread packets now and when I buy bread I put half a loaf in each bag and freeze them. I am finding I am not wasting any more bread and if I need more I just get more out.

Making the Switch to Bakery Bread Saves Money

Approximate $ Savings: $270pa

I was buying the generic brand bread at $1.49 a loaf or only getting my bread at the end of the day for 80 cents loaf but my kids would sneak snacks of it. (Weird huh?) I was going through 4 loaves every 3 days at a cost of over $4. I heard about the bad preservatives in bread that affect kids health and behaviour and so decided to switch to Bakers Delight wholemeal. It is free of nasty chemicals and 1 loaf lasts 3 days as the kids aren't snacking on it. So even though it is $3 a loaf (if you purchase 2 at a time) I am saving over $1 each day and my kids are healthier and better behaved. Plus they have a rewards card so after 5 purchases you get your sixth free, even more saving.

Mountain Bread Not so Steep

Approximate $ Savings: $1.50 per packet

A healthy alternative to normal bread is Mountain bread. They are healthy and come in a range of flavours. It retails in grocery stores for $3.89 a packet. If you purchase the packets on-line direct through the company, they are only $2.50 a packet with free delivery. The web-site also has a free recipe book. My children have found this bread to be great. The bread also has the benefit of having a 60 day shelf life, 12 months if frozen. www.mountainbread.com.au

Basic Breads at Budget Prices

Aldi sell white sandwich and toast sliced bread for .99 cents a loaf. Wholemeal are priced around $1.40 and their packs of English muffins come in at around $1.50 for 8 instead of around $3.00 for 6 at any of the major supermarkets.

Breadrolls

Approximate $ Savings: 50%

I found when buying bread rolls my four year old daughter wanted to be like everyone else and have one too, but she would only eat half leaving the other half lying around to dry out, so next time I bought our rolls I also bought a six pack of small dinner rolls for her. Now she thinks she is so good having her own mini bread rolls and best of all is she can eat the whole roll with no more wastage.

Great Bread at Reduced Prices

My family enjoys good quality bread as opposed to typical sliced supermarket bread. We find that the small supermarkets often sell yesterday's unsold bread for half price, including Phillipas wonderful variety of breads. Half price is a bargain for this quality of bread. It's great for toast.

Ringwood Market

At the Ringwood market there is a shop there that sells name brand (eg Tip-Top, Sunicrust etc)bread, muffins, crumpets etc., at about half the price of the supermaarkets. In the Forest Hill area, go to "7 Day Bakery" at Brentford Square, on Canterbury Road, for sliced bread from a Vietnamese bakery for $1.60 a loaf, and rolls 4 for $1.00

Country Prices

I don't know about Melbourne as I am country VIC but same prices apply. At BILO supermarkets you can get 5 loaves of bread for 6 dollars if ytou put them in the special bags provided. This equates to only $1.20 a loaf so by most standards this is a very cheap loaf of bread. I buy the 6 loaf bag and put them in the freezer and take out a loaf every night before going to bed and in the morning have nice fresh bread for the kids sandwiches. I am sure there might be cheaper bread out there but most people will have a BiLo supermarket relatively handy to them. Hope this is of some help.

Cheapsest Bread in Brisbane

The cheapest bread in Brisbane is at Aldi at 89C a loaf all the time. The big chain supermarkets did compete for the first couple of months Aldi opened in our area but now they have reverted back to almost double that for their home brand bread.

Bread Donations

Our church used to give bread donations to the community also. We used to get it from bakers delight. They often will give to churches and charities. The only catch is that you have to go to a Bakers Delight out of your area because you may be taking away from their business by giving to people in their immediate area. We were allocated a pick up night and we would go after closing and pick up sometimes 10 garbage bags of bread...and coffee scrolls....and fruit loaves. Perhaps a ring around would be a good idea. Hope this helps!

Some Bakers Delight give away their bread at the end of the day to charities for the homeless, like shelters etc. worth a mention anyway!

Bake Your Own Bread

Making bread at home is probably the cheapest way to get good quality bread, but failing that, there's 'Mount Barker Fresh' - a greengrocer in Mt Barker SA, where they sell fresh sliced white, wholemeal, wholegrain and continental loaves for 99 cents each.
