Crochet a Simple Shower Puff

 FEBRUARY 2019

Picture
Everyone is familiar with the netting shower puffs that come with gift sets of shower gel, soaps, moisturisers and so on.  They're balls of net, scrunched up and tied off to make a big puff, and they hand over the tap in the shower or bath.

And everyone is familiar with how scratchy they can be (exfoliating is fine, sanding layers of skin off isn't) and how quickly they get slimy and grungy; then when you toss them in the washing machine, they fall apart!

Just recently I learned to make these gorgeous shower spa pouffes, crocheted in 100% cotton. They are soft, pretty, and machine washable so they can be washed over and over and over. I just toss them in with the towels and peg them on the line in the sunshine to dry, and they're ready to be put back in the bathrooms.

You will need:
50g 8 ply crochet cotton
5mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
dc – double crochet

Start by making a magic circle.
A magic circle is simply creating a circle with a slip knot that you use as the foundation for your round crochet. The slip knot lets you tighten the circle up, closing the gap completely.

Once you've made the magic circle, chain 45. Join the length of chain by slip stitch into the circle. This creates the hanger for the puff.

Round 1: 20 dc into the circle. Join into the beginning dc. (20 dc)

Round 2: Ch 3 (this is the first dc in this round). 3 dc into the same stitch. 4 dc into each stitch around. Join into the top of the beginning ch. (80 dc)

Round 3:  Ch 3 (this is the first dc in this round). 3 dc into the same stitch. 4 dc into each stitch around. Join into the top of the beginning ch. (320 dc)

Round 4: Ch 3 (this is the first dc in this round). 3 dc into the same stitch. 4 dc into each stitch around. Join into the top of the beginning ch and tie off. (1280 dc).

To finish, weave ends in.
Notes: This uses the full 50g ball of crochet cotton. Look for it on sale. I found 50g balls of 4 ply crochet cotton for $1.88 a ball at a clearance centre and just doubled the yarn. You can also use Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (I buy this online from Yarn Over in Brisbane - I am yet to find it locally).

The woman who taught me to make these was using a chenille yarn she bought on sale at Spotlight.
