Cut the Winter Power Bill with a Thermos - June 2018
In winter, we boil a large kettle and keep the water in a large thermos flask. The water is boiled on our slow combustion wood heater, which we relight each day (to save wood overnight).
The thermos hot water is kept overnight and is used in the morning (before we light the wood-stove) for a number of uses - including washing my face in the morning in a hand basin - with a saving on gas hot water.
We also use a small kettle to heat water on the gas stove instead of an electric kettle, with a significant saving on the more expensive electricity. Any extra water not used from the small kettle is kept in the thermos flask.
