Dear Cath
Q. Hi, just wondering what is the best way to get rid of the BO smell in my hubby and son's tops. I have tried Preen pre wash spray and even spraying the underarms with white vinegar. Thanks in advance, Giuliana
A. Make a paste of 1 teaspoon straight dishwashing liquid, 2 tablespoons bicarb soda and 4 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide (you'll get a bottle at the chemist for a couple of dollars). Sprinkle the underarms of the shirts with the bicarb, drizzle over the dishwashing liquid and peroxide, rub it into a paste and use a small nail brush or toothbrush to scrub it into the stain. Let it sit for an hour, then wash as usual. If the shirts are coloured do a colour-fastness test first as both bicarb and peroxide can take the colour out.
Depending on how long the stain/odour has been there you may need to repeat the process a couple of times.

Q. I'd read here that Peroxide was good for cleaning bathroom grouting in the shower/bath. I can't find the article to read about the quantity or method used. Lyn
A. The article you are looking for is Bathroom Cleaning Quickies.
It has the tip about cleaning grout with bicarb soda and peroxide:
"Cleaning grout can be done with a paste made from mixing bicarb soda and peroxide. Let sit on the grout for 30 minutes…scrub with a toothbrush."

Q. Can you please advise me what I can use in my garbage (wheelie) to absorb the smell between fortnightly pickups. I live on my own and really don't have enough garbage to put out weekly as I also recycle everything I can. Thank you in advance. Janice
A. A scrub out with Cheapskates Miracle Spray would do the trick as the eucalyptus oil in the mixture would act to kill the smell. After that, try to prevent it happening again by wrapping veggie scraps well in layers of newspaper before placing in the bin. I put foods that are likely to smell (e.g. meat scraps, bones etc.) in a biodegradable bag and keep them in the freezer until bin collection day. The local council provides the bags, but you could also use a regular plastic bag and just empty it into the bin on collection day.
Pour a layer of kitty litter into the bottom of the bin. This absorbs any liquids or smelly things put into the bin.
think about what you put in your bin. Food scraps belong in the compost. Recyclables in the recycling bin. Disposable nappies (if you use them) should be double wrapped in old newspaper then bagged. Any fishy remains should be frozen until bin day. If you wash your bin out in plain water and dry thoroughly each week it won't smell.
