Dear Cath - June 2018
Q. For your home cleaning suggestions, do I buy eucalyptus oil or eucalyptus solution? Sonia
A. I suggest you use eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus solution is a diluted oil, and it won't have the same strength as the straight oil. The oil is more expensive, but you use a lot less for a better result. As with all essential oils, buying pure oil and the best quality you can afford is worth it. Bosisto's eucalyptus oil is often on sale, and when it is, I take advantage and buy a 4 litre bottle, and then share it with three friends. A litre of eucalyptus oil lasts me about a year in Miracle Spray and for other cleaning. As it's a pure essential oil it's safe to use in oil burners to clear stuffy noses too. Aldi also now have eucalyptus oil in their regular grocery range for a reasonable price - last time I looked it was $6.99 for a 200ml bottle of pure eucalyptus oil.
Eucalyptus oil is so useful around the home, it should be in every cleaning and first aid kit.
Here are some ways to use eucalyptus oil around the home:
1. In Miracle Spray
2. If you like scented washing, add 5 drops to a load of washing
3. Add a capful to a bucket of hot water to wash floors
4. As an air freshener - add 2 or 3 drops to a cotton balls and sit them behind photo frames or in the coin tray of the car
5. Freshen as you vacuum - pop a cotton ball with a few drops of eucalyptus oil into the barrel of the vacuum and freshen the air as you vacuum
6. To remove sticky stuff - add 3 - 5 drops to a cotton ball and wipe over stubborn adhesive to easily remove
7. To remove scuff marks from vinyl floors - a few drops on a cotton ball will easily wipe the marks off and leave a pleasant fragrance as a bonus
8. To freshen the toilet - a few drops on a cotton ball and placed in a jar lid (I use a little ceramic sauce dish) behind the loo will keep it smelling fresh.
9. A few drops in a vaporiser will help clear stuffy noses - don’t be tempted to use straight eucalyptus oil on a hanky, it may smell great but you could burn your nose!
10. Add a few drops to the washing water when laundering woollens and blankets to keep them fresh and help deter silverfish and moths
11. In MOO Wool Mix
Eucalyptus oil is a cheap and readily available addition to your home cleaning arsenal.
