Dear Cath - November 2018

Picture
Q. I have a box of single socks that have accumulated from 5 people in our house over the years - any suggestions as to what I can do with them as it seems awful just to throw them in the bin. Vicki

A. The first thing that springs to mind is dusters! Old socks, either wool or cotton, make brilliant dusters. Or slip a bar of Gardener's Soap into the toe and tie it to the outside tap. Old socks may not be useful on your feet, but they make great soap socks.

Of course you could always turn them into sock puppets. A bit of imagination and a few minutes with some buttons, wool and embroidery thread and you can have a sock puppet family, guaranteed to keep littlies entertained.

Filled with rice and lavender, old socks make great aromatherapy pillows.

Use clean, old socks as to cover ice packs before applying to sprains and bruises. They're soft, and because they fit over the pack, they won't come off like a tea towel would.

Another way to use old socks is to clean and polish shoes. They're great for cleaning runners. Just add a swipe of toothpaste to the sock and rub over the shoe to clean off scuff marks and stains. Then wet another sock and use it to wipe off the dry toothpaste.

You're limited only by your imagination when it comes to using old socks.
