LONG LIVE 100 PLUS
After watching the Bluezone Netflix series, I was so inspired to go vegetarian for at least 6 days per week, with one day saved for meat, "the roast". A variety of veggies from a good greengrocer with freshest of veggies and pulses, for the month cost $120 and meat $9.99kg for lamb chops when that price. Of course, if you grow your own veggies, which my family are attempting to do, it is much cheaper. Long live 100 plus. Saving: Your health and lots of $

Cheapskates Weight Loss Plan
Over the last 4 months I have lost 15kg (about 30 left to go) just by calorie counting. I use Google to look up calorie amounts of foods or My Fitness Pal is a good free online tracker. If you don't have access to the internet then you can buy a calorie counter book from newsagents or book shops for around $10. I had tried various diets but the food required was too expensive. I try to make healthy choices like fruit and cold boiled eggs for snacks. I have found this to be the only way I can afford to lose weight. Good luck - it's time consuming at first but it won't take long for you to get the hang of it. I just use an unused school exercise book to keep track.

Portion Control is a Cheapskates Weight Loss Plan
As ridiculous as it sounds, portion control! Weigh or measure EVERYTHING. Portions should be in line with providing sufficient nutrients and kilojoules for your age and activity level - this means you may have to read up on nutrition requirements, your State's Health Department will have this information readily available on their website. You won't even have to switch to, for example, low fat products, which often replace the fat with sugar. Eat slowly, DON'T HAVE SECONDS ON ANYTHING and be HONEST. Eating this way means you don't have to deprive yourself, it can be accommodated anywhere, anytime and doesn't require additional outlay for special ingredients.

A Cheap Weight Loss Plan
I lost 20 kiloss using a a website, www.calorieking.com.au. It's completely free, it calculates your calories, offers meal plans and shopping lists. It has recipes and they can be changed for one to 50+ people, it tracks your exercise. If you want a mobile app, then My Fitness Pal is great, however on My Fitness Pal, the information (calories etc.) are user submitted so not as accurate. On a positive note, you can enter your own. You can even find recipes online and enter them into your meals and it will calculate the calories. I prefer Calorie King, but using it on tablet or phone can be challenging. They have an App for Iphone and Ipad but I haven't used it so cannot comment. I love the ease of use of CalorieKing and as I said I've lost 20 kilos completely free.

Lemon Water
Approximate $ Savings: $200 a year
I'm not sure if this is too basic a tip but it has helped me enormously over the last couple of weeks! As I'm trying to lose weight at the moment and encourage my family to be healthier, I've stopped buying cordial from the supermarket and have purchased 4 lemons per week. My new 'lemon water' is much healthier, keeps me hydrated and I'm saving money instead of buying sugar filled, preservative added liquid rubbish! Not to mention, the calories I save each time a have a glass!

Weight Loss Recipes
Instead of paying for all the weight loss meals from the supermarket or diet companies make your own. Invest in the Symply too Good books by Annette Sym. They may seem a bit pricey but you will use them lots and try eBay for them like a friend of mine did. They are also full of hints on how to loss weight and keep it off. Annette uses every day ingredients too so the meals are very cheap and she says which ones freeze well (great for lunches at work etc). And the whole family can eat the meals too which furthers the savings.

Lose Weight Safely and Cheaply
Recently I joined a free online weight loss club (www.calorieking.com.au) which requires you to keep an online calorie diary. It's easy and quite fun to use, and as I was using it, I began thinking - there should be something similar for money. I find tracking every cent a pain - even though I know I should. So I started searching for one. There are a few online, and I tried a couple of them, but they were all either too complex, or only calculated in pounds or American dollars, or had a limited service which you then had to pay to upgrade to. Then we found Budget Pulse, www.budgetpulse.com, a free online service which allows you to track you income and expenditure, add transactions as you spend, budget and watch your accounts, all for free and all easy to use. Since then, we have really worked out that we have about $100 per week to save that we didn't even know we had, we have been able to really watch what we are spending on both food and other things like coffee out and clothes, and feel much more in control. Oh, and by the way - Calorie King works too - I have lost almost 4 kg in a month.

Heat Neutralizes Lactose in Dairy Products
Try using UHT milk products; at a certain heat (which all UHT products should meet) the lactose in dairy products becomes dormant, so your sister shouldn't get sick! My brother-in-law is also lactose intolerant and so instead of making him different meals at family functions both my sisters and I all use UHT milk. It is also cheaper (and more convenient) than fresh milk anyway, and my brother-in-law doesn't get sick. Even if you only use it for cooking it will still save you heaps! About trying to get her to see 'the light' of living cheap - maybe show her some of the rewards? Before my boyfriend and I bought our first house I was not at all interested in living the Cheapskates lifestyle, but now I can see the rewards in other areas such as a new winter wardrobe or overseas holidays. I now always look for cheaper options, especially around the house where no one else would notice, such as the washing powder recipe that saves us $10 a month for nothing! The result is what makes me keep going, so it may cost you short term (to share your rewards with her) but you should all benefit long term!

Aldi Powdered Milk Doesn't Upset Digestion
I'm lactose intolerant yet have no "digestive troubles" at all using powdered milk from Aldi. I make it up using 2/3 cup of powder to 1L of water. This might be worth a try.

Involve Kids in Meal Planning and Preparation
You don't say how old your partners sister is, but most kids will change if they become more involved. Try to get her to cook one meal a week, and set an upper and lower limit on expenses for that meal. Tell her she can keep anything she saves as an incentive. Often kids just do not have a clue of the costs involved. Take her shopping with you and show her how to make the best choices. Watch out for long life soy milk on special and stock up with it.

Get Advice for Living with a Lactose Intolerance
My son has Transient Lactose Intolerance and Fructose Malabsorption. If you are of English, Irish or Scottish decent then true lactose intolerance is extremely unlikely, it will be transient and you need to work out what is irritating her tummy and then she will recover. For my son it is the FructMal, if his diet is right for this then he is fine with lactose. There are some great support groups around. My advice is if you need any info on any food intolerance call Shepherd Works in Melbourne. We actually flew there from regional Queensland and found it to be the best money we ever spent. To actually get to speak to someone that knew what they were talking about and be given the latest information instead of ten year old information like the hospitals gave us was fantastic. Good luck, and well done for taking on your partner's sister.

Save on Lactose Free Bickies
Approximate $ Savings: $2.15 a pack
Lactose free ready made biscuits are expensive at $3.44 for a 100g pack. But in the regular biscuit aisle I have found that the Paradise brand Malt biscuits contain no lactose containing ingredients. At $1.29 (when not on special) and 99 cents on special that is a good saving if you don't have the time to bake snacks from scratch all the time like I was until finding this out. A note: I have found with some other companies products that they change their ingredients without warning so every pack I pick up I double check that they are still lactose free.

Be Lighter for Less
For those of us who are watching our weight - who isn't? - Aldi are starting to stock several really good items under their "Be Light" range. There is rice snacks, fish portions and meals (in the freezer section) and I even saw a lady with "Be Light" cereal under her arm. The fish is really yummy along with the rice snacks - have to hide them from the kids! It is nice to see for those of us who are watching our dollars, our waist and health that there are still items around for us too.

Weight Loss and Meal Planning
Approximate $ Savings: Depends on the number of people in the family taking part
I have been trying to lose weight for ages...In fact for 12 years since I had my daughter. I could never stick to anything, as it was difficult to cook differently for me than for the family. I recently found a FREE website www.calorieking.com.au You fill in your profile and they tell you how many calories you need to eat to get to your ideal weight. They generate meal plans that are easy but interesting. I usually have most of the stuff except the fresh food in the house. They ask if you want to lose weight, maintain weight or put on weight. As I said I want to lose weight, but I would join the website just for the meal plans. They offer you recipes if the meal is "different" and a shopping list, which means you will never buy something you don't need again. If you are doing it to lose weight they have a food diary that is dead easy to keep with a bar at the end of the page like a thermometer, which fills up red as your calories get used up. You record your exercise and the bar shrinks back...keeping you motivated. You also record your water intake and number of steps per day (optional). If I were not trying to lose weight I would join to maintain weight just for the meal plans which are easy, tasty and family friendly. You can choose to include take-away or just plain cooking. You choose a weigh in day and on that day you record your weight and your measurements. They generate graphs to show you your progress and give you hints along the way. If you lose too much they tell you how many calories to take away and vice versa if you put on weight. Their way of eating is healthy and balanced and includes all the nutrients necessary to stay healthy. You do not have to use their meal plans, you can choose your own food and record it but the meal plans are what drew me to them in the first place. I have lost four kg in four weeks. It is easy to stick to and has forums and live meetings for members at least once a week. It is ALL free. Every week I print out my meal plan and my shopping list and multiply by four (to take into account that my husband will eat more even though there are only three of us) and then I cook the meals they suggest and serve the lunches and breakfasts they suggest. This site is brilliant. I know this is really long but honestly you have to try it to believe it...and it's Australian and FREE! Good luck to any of you that join to lose weight and for those of you that join for the meal plans and shopping lists...happy cooking!
