Water for Goldfish

Instead of buying bottled drinking water pour water from tap into jug and leave for approx. 3 days. By that time all of the chemicals have evaporated and voila you have pure drinking water. Gold fish can be kept in this water without adding any drops bought from a pet shop - money saver.

Healthy Goldfish

Occasionally add one teaspoon of salt to 2 litres of fresh water at room temperature and put your goldfish in it for about 15 minutes. Then return them to their tank. The salt swim makes them healthier and gives them a new lease on life.

Cleaning A Fish Tank

Rub the inside of fish tanks with salt to remove hard water deposits, then rinse well before returning the fish to the tank. Use only plain, not iodised, salt.

Budget Fish Tank Décor

For those with fish tanks, many like to put a "reef scene" laminated backing on them. Being short on cash I used some pretty left over wrapping paper and stuck it up with masking tape. Its a unique alternative and I am always getting compliments on it. Looks good against the fish too.

Keeping Pet Fish on a Shoestring

Fish tank filters can be expensive. Buy wadding from somewhere like Spotlight and use this instead of an expensive filter or filter wool. Buy frozen fish food in bulk. I buy blood worms for my fish. They are $4.50 each tray, 3 trays for $10 or 15 trays for $30. Ask if you get a saving for buying in bulk. Produce shops often stock dried pet foods for dogs and cats in bulk much cheaper than the supermarkets. Contributed by Tracey, Rochedale South, 9th March 2009
