Hello Cheapskaters,
Welcome to the October edition of the Cheapskates Journal.
This is month is the start of our annual Christmas Countdown , eight fun-filled weeks of planned Christmas preparations so we can sit back and enjoy Christmas 2016 while everyone else is running around like a headless chook, stressed and hot and bothered. I love a good plan, and the Cheapskates Club Christmas countdown is a great plan!
But this month's Journal isn't all about Christmas. C'mon, it is only October, we aren't putting the Christmas tree up just yet!
This month has seen Ford put over 600 Australians out of work. Now while that is sad, and as far as I'm concerned very wrong, that's not as concerning to me as hearing that 87% of those 600 Australians haven't found other employment. What's worse those 87% hadn't started looking for other employment on their last day at work.
While they will have payouts and their bank accounts may look very healthy, without a plan going forward to ensure they will be able to maintain their standard of living, that money won't last long. I know! I've been in that position, the difference being Ford employees have known for a while the day was coming when they would no longer have a job and some still didn't plan and prepare. Wayne and I didn't have that advantage, so we weren't prepared and we had to come up with a plan on the fly.
Do you have a plan for dealing with unemployment? Even if you believe your job is safe and secure you should have a plan. You should also have an emergency fund to provide living expenses while you are unemployed. In the next 15 months or so there will be thousands more Australians finding themselves out of work. Let's hope they're as smart as Cheapskaters and know how they're going to live and what they're going to do when they find themselves without a job.
