Save $240 Admin Costs on Gas

For the last eight years or so I have had a gas hotplate for cooking. I used to get upset when I received my quarterly account, showing about $6 or $7 dollars of gas usage and about $60 service charge! I had a kitchen reno last year, and decided to revert back to electricity for cooking, as we are pensioners and need to cut costs wherever able to! I purchased an 'induction' hot plate from 'ALDI' for $349. I am so happy I made the change, I love Induction cooking, the hotplates are a lot easier to keep clean than gas were, and I am saving at least $240 a year!

Check Pilots to Slash Bill

Approximate $ Savings: $50-100

We have a gas heater that has a pilot light as its ignition point. During the warmer months and unless we are going to use the heater we turn the pilot light off. In summer we only pay the fee for having the connection and have no usage costs.

Saving on Hot Water

Saving on hot water I have been saving on the cost of hot water for some time now. When I first moved into my last place of residence, I found myself with a gas powered hot water heater for the first time. Not knowing anything about the cost of refill bottles, I had the system running all the time and was shocked to find that I used up more than a 45kg Bottle of LPG gas at a cost of more than A$116.00 so what I did was turn the system on to the lowest setting and only turn it on higher when I wanted to take a shower. Presto! Saving of more than $ 250.00. One bottle (45kg) of LPG gas now lasts more than 3 months. It works the same with electric water heaters; just throw the main switch for the controlled supply meter after heating up and put it back to "on" the night before you need really hot water. Savings depend on size of family and frequency of hot water needs but should be between $ 250.00 to $ 1000 per year.

Recycled Firelogs

Approximate $ Savings: $40-50 per season

We have a wonderful wood-burning heater. To stretch our invaluable red-gum supply ($240.00 tonne) I have hit on a different alternative. Our family goes through boxes (1-2 a week) of the most economical tissues. I used to throw the box in re-cycle bin and wonder why our bin would fill up so quickly. Now, I re-fill the used tissue box with scrap re-cycled papers until it can take no more (packing it in as tightly as possible without breaking the box) VOILA! A brick of fuel with similar burning capabilities to a stick of wood.

Cold for Handwashing Saves on Gas

Approximate $ Savings: $10

When giving hands a wash I used to automatically reach for hot tap using my left hand, I now turn on the cold tap as I rarely wait for hot water anyway. When using the kitchen mixer tap make sure it is always fully on cold, as part way will still turn on the gas for heating the water. My gas bill is around $10 less per month and using less gas is good for the environment.

Save 5% off Every Gas Bill

At Red Energy you can save 5% off every gas bill. In some cases their rates will be cheaper than with your current utility. Also you receive $50 off the first bill! You can transfer back to old utility anytime you want.

Bottled Gas Saving

My tip is on saving on your gas bill. We live out of town and have gas hot water and cooking, delivered in cylinders. I recently rang around for the cheapest price and discovered a great deal with Kleenheat Gas. Not only is their gas cheaper ($8 per bottle cheaper than my previous supplier), iIf you change to Kleenheat they will give you two free cylinders of gas. To be eligible you must not have previously been receiving gas from Kleenheat. With the saving per bottle and the two free bottles I have saved $225 this year and will save $72 each year after.
