Long Live 100 Plus

After watching the Bluezone Netflix series, I was so inspired to go vegetarian for at least 6 days per week, with one day saved for meat, "the roast". A variety of veggies from a good greengrocer with freshest of veggies and pulses, for the month cost $120 and meat $9.99kg for lamb chops when that price. Of course, if you grow your own veggies, which my family are attempting to do, it is much cheaper. Long live 100 plus. Saving: Your health and lots of $

Dog Biscuits from Leftovers

After cooking your meat, use the juice or fat to make dog biscuits by adding out of date flour, herbs and milk (cheaper carton milk) to the meat juice or fat. Roll into balls and place on baking paper lined tray and cook in oven for 20 minutes. Done in no time and store in airtight container in fridge. Dogs love them. Add them to their dinner and save cost also on dog food. Cost: approximately $1 per 12.

Scrambled Eggs for Dog Food

When dog food is so expensive, we use free range eggs from our three chickens to make scrambled eggs, with stale bread broken up and added, with a little of long life carton milk. Only a handful of dry dog food is needed to add when serving dog food for the day. Our dogs love it as it warms their bellies in winter. Sometimes I make homemade yeast free bread with herbs and cheese topping ($1 a loaf), and add that bread to the dog food. Makes it twice as cheap and a great saving.

Fresh Dog Treats for Free

For some reason our husky loves fresh cabbage to crunch on. When making coleslaw for the week, our husky receives the left over cabbage for a treat. He sits there waiting for his treat. I consider this a freebie for us and the dog as it would go in the compost or in the bin on every other day. Keeps him healthy and us cashed up!

My Designer Kitchen Update

Some time ago I painted our pantry door with purple paint and hand painted some flowers. I loved it at least. It tired over time, so I decided to update the pantry door with some adhesive wallpaper, the cheap version bought from Kmart for approximately $5.00 a roll. It covered the front and back of the pantry door with bright forest leaves. Worked a treat and freshened up the kitchen. Had left over wallpaper for opposite walls in the kitchen to bring theme together in opposite room.  Cost: $5

Also bought one kitchen curtain from Spotlight on sale with green leaves and branches with bluebirds to add to the kitchen meals area. Instead of buying two side drapes, I bought one for the window and bring in the sides of curtains to the middle. Saving: $200

Then I bought an outdoor hanging basket stand from Aldi, again on special but used it for indoor near the window with new curtain. Added strawberry plant, hanging tomato plant, parsley and herbs in each of the four baskets. Cost: $60

So a new kitchen look for $265. To make it cheaper I could have bought a curtain from the op-shop, making a total of $65 but I did fall in love with this curtain and waited until it was on special and saved by buying one only for window.
Happy days!

Save Money on Torch Batteries for Blackouts

We are hearing that this summer we are facing increasing power blackouts. Batteries are now so expensive for torches and candles are not safe with young children and pets. I purchased from Bunnings four single solar garden lights on stakes. I put them in a flower pot on my front porch being charged free from the sun. We had an eight hour blackout a few weeks ago and I was able to bring them inside and we had free lighting. I had 1 for the bathroom, kitchen, lounge and hallway. The children loved carrying their solar torches around the house.

Cabbage Short Cuts

When making chow mein I buy coleslaw mix. By the time you buy and chop cabbage, carrots etc. it also costs more. If you get a large bag it can be also used when you have corned beef/silverside. I steam some coleslaw mix, add butter and pepper and serve with mashed potato as my sides.

Coconut Cream to Coconut Milk

I often need two cans of coconut milk for my recipes. Instead, I buy coconut cream (which is similar price) and add water. Same results for half the price.

Quick German Potato Salad Dressing

Into a half full bottle of potato salad dressing, I pour approximately 2 tablespoons of Mild American Mustard and shake well. I hard boil an extra egg when we are having boiled eggs for breakfast and leave it in the egg boiler to harden, to use later on. Once the potatoes are cooked al dente for the salad, cool, then add the mixed mustard dressing to the potato plus chopped chives, parsley and gherkins.
