31 Days of MOO No 2: Eco Friendly Drain Cleaner
Cleaning drains regularly helps to prevent costly blockages and unpleasant odours and a whole lot of frustration. I use this method to clean my kitchen, bathroom and laundry drains once a month. It costs just a few cents (and drain cleaner is expensive - $22 for one brand at Coles) and takes just a few minutes.
You will need:
½ cup bicarb soda
1 cup white vinegar
A kettle of boiling water
the juice of half a lemon
Step 1. First, pour the bicarb soda down the drain. Bicarb soda is alkaline, so it will cut through grease and other gunk left in those pipes.
Step 2. Then, mix the white vinegar and lemon juice. Pour the mixture down the drain on top of the bicarb soda. Vinegar is an acid and will make the bicarb soda foam, providing some agitation to clean your drain.
Step 3. Wait five minutes, then pour the boiling water down the drain. The water will wash out the foam mixture, leaving you with a clean drain.
