Hello Cheapskaters,
Welcome to the first newsletter for 2016.
There are some great ideas in this week's newsletter, I'm especially liking the recipes for flavoured coffee syrups. I love my coffee, but during the summer hot drinks aren't terribly appealing. But flavoured iced coffee is the perfect pick-me-up for a hot summer afternoon. These syrups cost around 80 cents to make - a fraction of the price of bought flavoured syrups - so my occasional mid-afternoon iced coffee treat costs 90 cents! You really can have the things you love when you live the Cheapskates way!
Have a great week everyone.

Sayings to Save By
Use one or all of these mantras to help you evaluate your spending habits:
Is this a Need or a Want?
Movies, holidays, computers, mobile phones, internet access and fast food are all examples of luxuries that you can live without.
Sweat the Small Stuff
A couple dollars here and there add up quickly. A cappuccino for $2.20 may not seem like much, but one a day, every day for a year adds up to a whopping $803!
Free is Good
Listen to the radio instead of buying CDs, watch free TV instead of cable, go to the library, walk in the park.
Will I Still Want This Tomorrow?
Don't buy on impulse. Wait 24 hours to be sure you really want it. If you think it will be gone before then, ask the store to put a 24 hour hold on that particular item.

Coffee Syrups
If you love good, flavoured coffee you are going to love these amazing coffee syrups. You've seen them at coffee shops and in boutiques and gourmet grocers - even Aldi sells them (and they're good and not too expensive) but you can easily MOO amazing coffee syrups, and they make delicious iced coffees, perfect for summer afternoon treats.
Most syrups are based on a basic simple syrup - the one we all learned to make in Home Ec all those years ago - with flavourings added.
Basic Simple Syrup:
1 c. water
1 c. granulated sugar
Put both in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a low boil, stirring often. Boil for 5-7 minutes, or until all sugar has dissolved. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
Vanilla Syrup:
Split one vanilla bean down the centre and add to the saucepan with the sugar and the water. Remove after the syrup has cooled. You can strain it to remove the little vanilla seeds but I leave them as they add flavour and colour to the syrup.
Coffee Syrup:
Add 2 tablespoons of a strong, good quality instant coffee and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the syrup and stir until it is completely dissolved.
Cinnamon Syrup:
Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the sugar and water in the saucepan and follow the instructions for Simple Syrup. Shake well before adding to your coffee.
Raspberry Syrup:
Add 1/2 up of fresh or frozen raspberries to the sugar and water. Following the recipe bring to a boil, mashing the raspberries in the pan to release the juice. After the syrup has cooled strain, then pour into sterilised bottles to store.
Coconut Syrup:
Add 1/4 cup coconut cream to the water and sugar and continue to make the syrup. Shake well before adding to your coffee.
Caramel Syrup:
Follow the simple syrup recipe above. Once syrup is removed from the heat, stir in 1/2 cup of caramel sauce. This syrup may separate in the fridge, shake well before using
To make an iced flavoured coffee I add 1 - 2 tablespoons of flavoured syrup to a glass of icy cold low-fat milk and then whizz it with the stick blender. If you have a milkshake maker or a vitamiser they'll make great iced coffee too.
This week we will be eating:
Friday: Meatloaf, salad
Saturday: Sausages, salad
Sunday: Roast Beef
Monday: Chicken & Sun-dried Tomato pasta bake
Tuesday: Meat balls, mash, beans, corn
Wednesday: BLT focaccias with pesto mayo
Thursday: MOO Pizza
There are over 1,500 other great money saving meal ideas in the Recipe File.

2016 Saving Revolution
Well Hi everyone.
First time I have set up a Blog so here goes.
I have completed the first lessons questions which I found interesting as I seem to have got my financial knowledge from my parents. This makes me think, have I given enough financial knowledge to my two boys (17 & 13)? I will be looking into this over the coming months.
I found my biggest challenge is the instability of my husband's work. He works for the state government and they are always saying they are going to be "downsizing" to cut costs. He has already had to take several pay cuts but we are still grateful he has a job.
I feel I have always been very financially savvy so this, I feel, is a great strength.
My goals are this I can do today/this year to make our life comfortable for future years e.g. in retirement.
I wish everyone the best of luck for the year as we work together on our journey.

7. Last Week's Question
Last week's question was from Robyne who wrote
"Hi, Happy new year to everyone. My youngest son received a smoker for combination Birthday/Christmas present. I bought some Liquid Smoke and some other mixes to go with it, and I am hoping people have some recipes for marinating meat for him. I bought a disc for him to try out really old recipes for doing it. Anything would be great for him to try out. He does a really nice bacon with molasses recipe he got from a fellow worker, but he likes to do those he sees on TV. Thanking you."
Karen Erickson answered
You cannot beat homemade pastrami in the smoker. You need one piece of corned beef washed, trimmed of fat and patted dry. We cover the whole piece in a mustard of your choosing and in a mortar and pestle we crush up an even mix of coriander seeds and black pepper corns. Lay the dry goods out on baking paper and roll the mustard covered corned beef until its completely covered. My hubby smokes this for about 5 hours and it's beautiful. Messy but so worth it. We have never bought pastrami since we've had our smoker. I hope he has some fun with it.
