Hello Nancy,
What a wonderful workshop we had last Saturday. It was a full house, and non-stop from 10am. We covered changes we make when we choose the live the Cheapskates way, Wendy did a great job of explaining the $300 a Month Food Challenge and went over meal planning and writing shopping lists and then after lunch I explained how to start, why to start and how to use a price book, finishing up with a quick explanation of the concept of MOOing (making our own) to save money, time and energy.
I'm still excited that there are now so many more Cheapskaters empowered to take control of their money and who are well on their way to living life debt free, cashed up and laughing (and getting those grocery bills down, down, down!).
This is my last newsletter for a few weeks. Wayne and I are off on holiday for five weeks. Some of you might remember that we did a trip to Cape York this time last year. At the time I was quite sick, and for most of the time we were away I was a little befuddled (more so than usual) and so missed quite a lot of our holiday. Now I am so much better, we have the opportunity to repeat some of that trip this year so we've taken it. It's not the exact same trip, we will be visiting different places and we won't quite get to the Tip, but any time away with my husband is good so I'll take whatever we can get.
I know we'll be in Mildura, Broken Hill, Mt. Isa and I've already been in touch with Cheapskaters in those towns and we're going to catch up. If you'd like to join us please email me for the details.
Hannah will be taking over the newsletters for the next few weeks and I know she'll do a brilliant job, and they will be full of great ideas to save you money, time and energy as usual.
Have a great few weeks everyone,
Happy Cheapskating,
Cath

MOO Clove Oil Mosquito Repellent
Re clove oil for getting rid of mould. I found the small bottles of clove oil rather expensive to buy. I boiled up 250g of cloves in 2 litres of water then let it sit overnight. Next day I removed the cloves then bottled the clove water. I had been given an old chair that had a lot of mould on it so I was cleaning the chair outside with the clove water. Now I am allergic to mosquitos and whenever they see me they say "dinner". I noticed when I was using the clove water there were no mosquitos around me. My husband was going into the bush to help our local Men's Shed on a project so I decanted a small amount of clove water into a spray bottle for him to use. You guessed it, no mosquitos around him. Now I can go outside at any time of the day with just a little spray of clove water for protection.

Use your Mobile Internet on your Laptop for Savings
Approximate $ Savings: $70 a month
After I separated from my husband and moved into my own place, I thought long and hard about whether I needed an internet connection at my new home. I have a laptop and use the internet for regular browsing, bill paying etc. I also have a mobile plan that has 2.5GB of data included which I rarely use all of. After some thorough investigation I learnt I can use my phone as a portable Wi Fi hotspot for my laptop! Under settings on your mobile there is an option for "Tethering and portable hotspot" and you can activate your mobile and then use your computers "Wireless Network Connection" button in the computer menu bar to connect to it just like you would a regular home modem. Make sure to put a password on it so your neighbours can't take advantage! I monitor my usage through my mobile phone provider to ensure I never go over. I can use my laptop now as some internet options are fiddly to use or unavailable on mobile phones. This has saved me about $70 a month and numerous installation costs by avoiding having a home phone and home internet installed.

DIY Non-stick Pans
After spending literally hundreds of dollars on supposedly lifetime guaranteed non-stick pans of all sizes, I have now given up on them. My tip is an ordinary pan of size for item to be cooked, tear off a piece of non-stick baking paper and line the pan - mostly in frying pans - just ensure the paper is only the size of the INSIDE of the pan. This way I achieve cooking without fat and best of all, when finished the food slides off the paper and the used paper goes into the bin. Added bonus - one clean pan for next time. I worked out the cost of the non-stick paper over time was a lot less than the so-called never stick pans!

3. Cheapskates Winning Tip
This week's winning tip is from Nancy Mackenzie. Nancy has won a one year Platinum Cheapskates Club membership for submitting her winning tip.
Huge Savings on Medication
Approximate $ Savings: $447.00
I recently discovered that I can save over $400 a year on medication costs simply by shopping around. I sat down one day made a list of my family’s medications and started ringing around to various branded chemists to compare prices. The results were unreal and for me I can save hundreds per year by shopping at Chemist Warehouse. The savings I have made are as follows: One of my migraine medications at my local discount chemist is $20. At Chemist Warehouse the exact same brand/box is $11. The other migraine medication is $19.90 for 4 tablets at my local chemist – at Chemist Warehouse its $10.75. To get an even cheaper price I get a script from my doctor with “Regulation 24” on it so I can bulk buy all my repeats in the one visit and I get it even cheaper. My migraine preventative is $10.75 per bottle at my local chemist and at Chemist Warehouse I pay just $6.55. Hubby’s medicine is $32.95 at most chemists and $18.90 at Chemist Warehouse. UNREAL – the list of savings goes on!! Again, same box, same brand! For my family the minimum saving per year is $447.25 simply by ringing around to various chemist’s to compare prices and shopping elsewhere!
Congratulations Nancy, I hope you enjoy your Cheapskates Club membership.

5. On the Menu with Anne
Meatless meals are great for your grocery budget and they add variety to your meal plan, but they don't need to be bland or just beans and rice. This pasta bake is really tasty and so quick to make, you can have dinner on the table in around 40 minutes. The leftovers freeze and reheat very well too.
Vego Pasta Bake
Ingredients:
500g packet noodles
1 tin tomatoes
1 onion, chopped
1 carrot, grated
1 zucchini, grated
½ cup corn kernels
Good pinch mixed herbs
Garlic to taste
100ml sour cream
1 cup grated cheese
Method:
Cook the noodles in boiling water until tender. Drain well. In a microwave safe combine the tomatoes, carrot, onion, zucchini and corn kernels the mixed herbs and the garlic. Cook on high for two minutes, stirring half way through. Stir through the noodles. Stir through the sour cream. Grease a baking dish and add the noodle mixture. Sprinkle evenly with grated cheese. Bake in a moderate oven for 25 – 30 minutes until cheese is golden brown.
This week we will be eating:
Friday: Hamburgers and chips
Saturday: Lamb wraps (leftover lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion, garlic yoghurt, wraps)
Sunday: Roast beef, baked veggies
Monday: Apricot chicken, steamed rice
Tuesday: Spaghetti bolognaise
Wednesday: Schnitzels, baked potatoes, steamed veggies

6. The $300 a Month Food Challenge with Wendy
Freezer Challenge Week 2
Hello fellow Cheapskaters and welcome to a new week of savings, challenges and sharing different ways of trimming the food budget.
Last week I gave you all a freezer challenge. The challenge is to eat as much food as you can out of the freezer. This is great for a few reasons - to make room in your freezer for specials and to reduce food wastage.
I've taken up the challenge myself as my freezers have been known to be chock a block full. They become so full that at times I can't fit another thing in. Would you believe, that's when my butcher has a sale and I can't make the most of it.
Last week I used my usual meat portions, some stewed apple for an apple crumble, frozen broccoli bought when it was cheap, 4 x freezer meals ( leftovers ), pasta sauce and bread that was given to us. I'm gradually getting room in my freezer. I can see the shelving in spots and it feels great.
I'm fighting the urge to go to the butcher. I want to wait until my stocks are much lower so that I have a chance to organise things a little better. I like to open a freezer and see exactly what I've got. NO SUPRISES!!!!! Surprises tend to be forgotten and become too old for it to be safe to feed my family.
This week I'll be making notes on my menu plan to include a few more bits and pieces from the freezer.
How is your freezer looking? Does it have space yet? Did you find any surprise packages?
Have a great week and BE ENCOURAGED!!!!!

9. Last Week's Question
Last week's question was from Kathleen who wrote
"I can't seem to find Naphthalene flakes anywhere in Kalgoorlie. We need to relocate and will have linen, clothing etc. in storage and previously have found moth balls not to be very efficient. Any idea what I can use instead would be gratefully appreciated please."
Hilary Mills answered
My Mum used to pack clothing, especially winter clothing, using bay leaves. She put a couple between each fold. Not only did everything smell wonderful, no insects ever had a nibble. She said it kept the moths at bay.
Sandy Whitcroft answered
Apart from the fact that Naphthalene flakes have a very strong smell, I prefer to use cedar wood. You can buy the little balls but a much cheaper option is to source an offcut from your local hardware store and plane it into shavings. I then put them into a little material bag tied with a pretty ribbon and put them throughout my wardrobes and drawers. I have found this method very successful, smells much nicer also.
Ann Streeter answered
In the past I have stored many fabric and linen products for long periods the following way: firstly ensure items are clean, launder if possible then fold and place in the large vacuum seal bags following the directions for those bags. I then stand them upright inside removalists packing boxes having placed some dried bay leaves in the bottom of the boxes first. Once the box is full then seal the box with packing tape, they are now ready for storage or moving. The bags protect the items from dust dirt and moisture and the bay leaves deter bugs and rodents. Hope this helps, good luck with your move.
M. Field answered
Try the following natural alternatives to repel moths and other insects: Citronella makes an excellent repellent. Place a few drops onto a square of cotton and add to linen cupboards to keep clothes fresh and free from moths. Sandalwood and lavender are also good repellents, as are cloves, tansy or woodruff. Fill a cotton bag with cloves and place between clothes to repel moths. Camphor has traditionally been used to keep moths away. Fill a little drawstring cotton bags with a mixture of dried rosemary, mint, thyme, ginseng and whole cloves. Place in cupboards and drawers between clothes.
