Food Swapping
I have a lemon tree and four chickens. Both produce too much for us so I thought I would advertise on the buy swap and sell website that I have a dozen free range eggs and I would be happy to swap for any other grown produce. I had people offer home grown pumpkins, other people offer apples and the list went on. So for a dozen eggs I received two pumpkins and for 12 lemons I received a bag of green apples. Pumpkin soup for tea and apple pie for desert. Made a few new friends as well.

What Can You Make From One Frugal Chicken Dinner
Approximate $ Savings: $10 per week
Our family of 3 has a roast every Sunday night. I take all the chicken off the bone serve up our roast dinner. With the left overs I will separate them into 2 Tupperware containers, (it's not heaps but it goes along way). The next night I make the penny pinching pizza base and we have a chicken, onion, cheese and whatever sauces are in the fridge pizza...always a favourite. The next night we have chicken soup, as I mentioned above there isn't heaps of chicken although I add soup mix and veggies to this and sometimes penne pasta and that's another tasty dinner at a fraction of the price. I buy the frozen chicken at Aldi for $5.50.

Supporting Charity and Saving $$$ on Groceries
Approximate $ Savings: $325+
The best $65 I ever spent. Last year I did a friend a favour and purchased an Entertainment Book last year as proceeds went towards a local charity. It has saved me hundreds of dollars as amongst all the 2 for 1 deals was the option to save 5% off gift cards to use at the large supermarkets. I now buy all my gift cards online with this 5% off option. If I spend $150 a week at the big supermarkets then I save $7.50 week, which over a year is $390 (minus the original outlay of $65). I have saved over $325. I can use these vouchers for my fuel purchases to save even more. I'm definitely supporting my local charity again this year. (This doesn't even include the 2 for 1 savings!) http://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/

This week's winning tip is from Nita Au. Nita has won a one year Platinum Cheapskates Club membership for submitting her winning tip.
Get Your Childcare Bond Back
Approximate $ Savings: $900
Did you forget to get your bond back when your child finished up at their childcare centre or pre-school? A lot of childcare centres and pre-schools charge parents two weeks’ worth of fees when their child starts there. If your child attended 5 days per week, that could be $800-1,000! And multiples of that for multiple kids! It’s easy to forget about that money a few years down the track when your child starts Big School. And it seems many centres "forget" to refund parents without being asked. It’s time to remind them :)

The Three Rs can Save You Money Part 2
RE-USE / RECYCLE
(These are in many ways the same thing):
Before putting anything in the recycling bin or garbage, ask yourself if there is anything AT ALL that you can use the item for. As a last resort cloths can become floor rags, paper can be mulched or put in the worm farm (every home should have a worm farm), plastic bags can be re-used over and over again - you get the general idea.
Refill containers - depending on what and where you are buying, you can take the original container and have it refilled and save even more.
Almost any container with a lid is useful for something. You can use old margarine tubs and ice cream buckets to freeze things in. Pasta sauce jars are great for jams, storing beans, lentils etc., can be filled with mixes to use as gifts - use your imagination! I love the large coffee tins with the push on lids and use them for lots of things but they are especially useful at the farm. They are insect and mouse proof and so we can safely leave food in the cupboard from weekend to weekend and not worry about vermin invading it. They are also great storage containers in the garage, for small toys etc.
Some containers without lids are handy, too. I used to buy individual yoghurts for the kids' lunches (in the bad old wasteful days!), and saved all the little cups. They're great for a million different things. The kids use them to hold water when they're painting, I give out snacks in them (sultanas, etc.), they can be used as scoops in the big coffee can, flour bin, etc.
It's almost too obvious to say, but there's nothing wrong with second-hand clothes. Our daughter loves hand-me-downs, and we rarely buy brand-new. In fact, she says Jacqueline must really love her because she always shares her clothes! And there's always the op shop, or a helpful friend.
These ideas are just a start - as you implement the 3R's into your Cheapskate lifestyle, you'll find many more ways to reduce, re-use and recycle. Just remember, it may be a completely new idea, so please share it with all of us.
6. On the Menu with Anne
Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows
What would winter be without hot chocolate and marshmallows? It's our beverage of choice during the cold, dank days of winter. In the olden days, before I became a Cheapskate, I'd spend a fortune on Milo and Ovaltine and Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate and Horlicks. But not anymore. These days I save a fortune and once a month or so I whip up a batch of MOO Hot Chocolate Drink Mix and if I'm feeling very nice I MOO a batch of marshmallows to float on the top of each steaming mug.
Delicious.
Hot Chocolate Drink Mix
Ingredients:
2 cups skim milk powder
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup coffee whitener (I use Coles Smartbuy)
Method:
In medium bowl, combine milk powder, sugar, cocoa, and coffee whitener.
To serve, place 3 teaspoons cocoa mix in mug. Stir in 3/4 cup boiling water.
Store the mix in an airtight container for up to 2 months.
Easy Marshmallow
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon gelatine
1 cup caster sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Red food colouring - optional
Method:
Using a fork, combine gelatine and 1/4 cup cold water in a microwave-safe jug. Microwave, uncovered, on HIGH (100%) for 30 seconds. Stir with fork until mixture is clear. Set aside to cool for 5 minutes. Using an electric mixer, beat sugar and 1/3 cup water on high speed for 5 minutes or until mixture thickens and turns white. While beating on high speed, pour cooled gelatine mixture into sugar mixture in a thin, steady stream. Beat for 10 minutes or until very thick. Add vanilla and enough colouring to produce a pale pink colour. Continue beating on high speed for 1 minute or until well combined. Pour into a well-buttered lamington tray that has been dusted with icing sugar. Use a wet spatula to even out the top. Cover with Clingwrap and put in fridge to set. To cut dip a knife in icing sugar (so it won't stick to the marshmallow) and cut into squares
This week we will be eating:
Friday: Meatloaf, mash, broccoli
Saturday: Crumbed fish and wedges
Sunday: Roast chicken, baked vegetables, gravy
Monday: Rissoles, sweet potato mash, cauliflower, gravy
Tuesday: Mexican lasagne
Wednesday: Muffin Surprise
Thursday: Zucchini slice and salad
In the fruit bowl: apples, bananas, mandarins, kiwi fruit
In the cake tin: Banana cake, Always Ready Muffins, Whole Orange Cake

The $300 a Month Food Challenge
Hi there folks. I hope you are enjoying some yummy winter comfort food in your house. We've been having stews, soups and casseroles lately. Oh, it really does warm the soul (and body).
As of today, my family will be without a car for the rest of the week and possibly into next week. This morning my car was put into the repairers to get some panel damage fixed and DH's car started to play up last week. The mechanics cannot start fixing it until Thursday and in the meantime he has been told not to drive it. So we have had lots of fun (not) buying a Myki card and looking up public transport timetables so that my DH can still get to work.
So last Friday I made a trip to the Dandenong Market for enough fruit and vegies for the next two weeks. Sunday night I ducked into Aldi to get enough milk to see us through until next Sunday as well as bread, cream and ice-cream. That's all our family needed to keep going. The fridge, freezer and pantry are well stocked. There is no real threat of running out of anything for many, many weeks. If the milk does run out before we get A CAR back, then I'll be making up powdered milk. It's not my preferred option but it will do the job.
I'm still in a slight panic about not having a car but I know we are ok in the food department. I have to look on the bright side of this predicament. I can't go to the shops (or anywhere for that matter) to spend any money.
As most of you know, I love stockpiling. It's one of my favourite subjects. I feel secure knowing if anything happened in our family or if the supermarkets all closed down without warning, then we'd be ok for a long time.
I have a few questions for you to ponder.
How long would your family be able to eat for if you couldn't get to the shops (for a reason)?
Would you go into a panic if you couldn't get to the shops?
How would you handle this situation?
Have a great week and BE ENCOURAGED!!!!!

To make this year a better year than last!
We moved interstate - fantastic move for us - loving every minute of it with no regrets. But it was a big drain on finances.
I had a (stupid, stupid, stupid) mishap in the kitchen involving our youngest daughter four weeks after our move, but an emergency flight via Careflight and 2.5 weeks in Adelaide Children's Hospital she has come out unscarred and isn't any worse off THANKFULLY... but it cost me my confidence handling raising my kids by myself (DH works away a lot and isn't a hands on Dad when it comes to everyday stuff) and drained our finances again.
But good news is as far as debt-wise, two car loans and a small Coles Myer Card. We have decided we need to sell DH's 4wd ute and buy a new second-hand car for me (he'll keep my current car) as it has served its purpose and is just wasting money sitting in the yard. So we have a goal to save for now. Once we sell DH's car we'll be almost debt free - first time in 10 years - will be very exciting time.

12. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change my email address?
This one is easy. Members can update their email address or any other details by clicking on "Edit Profile" directly under their membership number after they have logged in to the Member's Centre. Subscribers to our free newsletter can use the Change Your Address form (under Customer Service in the menu) and fill it out. Once you've filled it in click the send button and we'll do the rest. Please remember to include your old email address so we can find it in the list as well as the new one.
How do I know when my membership should be renewed?
When you login to the Member's Centre you will be told how many days of membership you have left once you have 30 days left. Just click on the link to renew and your membership will just continue on, uninterrupted.
What will you do with my email address?
We never rent, trade or sell our email list to anyone for any reason whatsoever. You'll never get an unsolicited email from a stranger as a result of joining this list.
