1. Hannah's Corner
Hello Cheapskaters,
I hope everyone is have a great week saving lots of money.
I'm going to try the tip sent in by Carol Heagney and dye a pair of winter boots I have. I need black boots and I have a pair that are really comfortable, they are just looking old. New boots will be at least $60, so I'm going to dye my old boots and hopefully get another winter out of them, maybe two, and add the money to the car fund. It sure is growing quickly.
Happy Cheapskating,
Hannah

Innovative Laundry Trolley
Approximate $ Savings: At least $15 for a new trolley
I had gone through two laundry trolleys due to wheels breaking and falling off. I was about to buy a third one when my clever neighbour suggested a baby stroller. I picked one up in great condition for $10 at a second hand shop. It has heavy duty wheels, is easy to manoeuvre and I have a stroller on hand if it is needed for friends or visitors. You may need a round laundry basket to fit in the stroller seat but these can be picked up cheaply if you shop around. I already had one so did not need to outlay extra for that. I am very happy with my ten dollar heavy duty laundry trolley.

Your Pastry Brush
Pastry brushes have another use besides brushing pastry. When using your metal grater, you'll always find some of the stuff you've been grating stuck to the metal, be it vegetable, fruit, cheese-whatever. Instead of wasting that last useful little bit, I scrape it off with a dry pastry brush, which works well. Some cheese still gets a bit sticky and stubborn, but most will come off. This time of year is so conducive to puddling around the kitchen, don't you think?

New Shoes at no Extra Cost
I decided I needed a new pair of shoes and as my Mother always taught me to buy leather shoes regardless of my financial situation because the leather breathes and stretch. I suddenly remembered what I did when I was 18 and worked opposite the Victoria Market. I bought court shoes for work that were out of fashion in colour and painted them with shoe colour. So I took a pair of old shoes (still in reasonable condition) and bought some black shoe paint for $10 and painted my old plum coloured shoes black, then some shoes I had bought cheaply from a out of stock store and painted them black and then a silver pair of sandals and painted them also. So I now have 3 pairs of new shoes so to speak for less than $10 as I still have 3/4 of the bottle full of paint. Now I have shoes that are fashionable with any colour I wear, just like the old days - new again!

4. On the Menu with Anne
No bake slices are so convenient. I love this one because it is chock full of dried fruit. The recipe calls for Fruit Medley, which is a little on the expensive side for my budget so I use 300g mixed dried fruit and 100g chopped, dried apricots and the slice is always delicious.
Mixed Fruit Slice
Ingredients:
125g butter
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup coconut
1 cup rice bubbles
1 cup rolled oats
4 crushed weetbix
1 pkt Fruit Medley (dried fruit mix)
Method:
Melt margarine, honey, peanut butter and brown sugar together. Add to other ingredients. Mix well and press into lamington tin. Set in fridge before cutting into squares.
This week we will be eating:
Friday: Fish cakes, potato gems, tossed salad
Saturday: Sausages, steamed veggies
Sunday: Roast Chicken, baked vegetables, broccoli, gravy
Monday: Tuna slice, salads
Tuesday: Corned beef, mashed potato, greens
Wednesday: Lasagne, tossed salad, garlic bread
Thursday: Homemade hamburgers
In the fruit bowl: Bananas, apples, mandarins
In the cake tin: Apple Cake, Coffee Cake, Crisp Coconut Biscuits

Freezer Challenge Week 6 - Freezer Clean Up
Welcome everyone to the food challenge.
Well, we've all made it to week 6 of the freezer challenge. Last week seemed like a great time to start the “Great Freezer Clean Up”. Now that most of us have a little room in our freezer, we can move things around and arrange like items together.
With Darren's birthday on Wednesday I got a leg of lamb out of the freezer. It's defrosting in the fridge right now. Ohhhh, I can't wait for roast leg of lamb dinner and all the roast veggies to go with it. By taking the lamb out of the freezer I was able to stack some boxes on top of each other. Previously my freezers were so jam packed that the boxes had to be slotted in where possible. I'm a bit of a neat freak so stacking those boxes felt good. Darren's big birthday party will be on Sunday so all the mini quiches, sausage rolls and choc brownies I'd made and frozen will be coming out on Saturday and going straight to the fridge. My freezers will be very roomy by then but my fridge will be chock a block for 24 hours.
A couple of months ago I bought lots of chicken drumsticks from a supermarket for $1.99 kg. These also had to be slotted into small spaces here and there in my freezers. This week I was able to move quite a few of them to my chicken shelf in a small freezer. As soon as my small freezer is looking empty I'll be able to defrost it and rearrange things.
How have you gone with your “Great Freezer Clean Up??” Are things looking a little tidier?
Please feel free to continue eating out of your freezer and tidying up. Everyone works at their own pace.
Have a great week and BE ENCOURAGED!!!!!

Less Waste, More MOO
Slowly getting back on to the cheapskate wagon after a couple of months away!!
My first MOO back will be some cheapskates washing powder, which I haven't tried yet. I had heaps of trouble finding Borax so if anyone is Southern Adelaide knows where it's sold I would love to know!! I happened to check the cleaning area at Masters and found some (finally!) so I grabbed some. Hopefully around $6 is normal price for a plastic container. if not hopefully I can find it cheaper elsewhere!! Also is a bit far to go just for Borax! Making this washing powder will be a good way to use up spare soaps that don't normally get used up. I really love The body shop and people often give me a gift pack on birthdays and Christmas. Usually there is a soap in these but we don't really use soap so they all sit in the bathroom cupboard! Now I have a way to use them up and it will be very luxurious washing powder!!
