2. From The Tip Store
Long Lasting, Lots of Fun, Dog Toys
I have a medium sized dog that loves to chew and toys were costing a fortune. I decided to buy her a whole coconut from the fruit & veg section for about $2. She plays with it like a ball until she breaks it then gets to eat the coconut inside. Helps keep her healthy too.

Don't Get Into Hot Water Over Power Bills
Both my children are no longer living with me and yet my power bill was the same. My electric hot water system is the culprit!! I decided to turn it off and see how long it takes to get through the stored hot water. So far 4 days and counting.

Editor's note: Remember to turn your hot water off when you are away from home for more than 48 hours too. There's no point heating water you're not going to use. Cath
Check Lists are Invaluable
As I have family in another state I thought someday I might be needed and have to leave to get to them in a hurry. If this happened I know my mind would be in a muddle so I have made an emergency packing check list, things I would not think of such as prescriptions and pills, phone and charger, legal papers such as Power of Attorney, in case they are needed, passport for identification as I do not have a license, an address book, torch, notebook and pen, cheque book, bank book, current bills, bill bar codes, camera and charger, glasses etc. I also have made out two packing lists, one summer and one winter so I have check lists when packing for holidays. Saves so much time and effort.

3. Cheapskates Winning tip
This week's winning tip is from Teri Mudiman. Teri has won a one year Platinum Cheapskates Club membership for submitting her winning tip, a twist on the 52 Week Saving Plan that is paying down debt.
The 52 Week Plan to Reduce Debt
Approximate $ Savings: $1378.00 +
When I first saw the 52 week Money challenge, I thought it might be a good idea so I started two. One is reverse and both into separate savings accounts at the bank. this way I can see which earns more interest. The idea is you put aside $1.00 the first week and $2.00 the second week finishing up with $52 in the last week. This will put $1378.00 into a piggy bank or more into an interest savings account. but then I thought about the credit card or loan account. both are around the $3,000.00 and if both were reduced by that amount by the end of the year how much would I save on interest? so I have started with just the CC now because money is still a bit tight until I go back to work. You wouldn't have to do it from 1st January to 31st December. any block of 52 weeks will do. Set up a reminder each payday. You won't miss it the first few months and by half way you will be getting excited with how it is working.
Congratulations Terri, I hope you enjoy your Cheapskates Club membership.

5. Living Green in 2014
The Zero Waste Challenge: Waste Not, Want Not
There's no easier way to waste money than by regularly throwing out old food that you never used. The best way to make your shopping list super-effective is by coming up with a meal plan for the week/fortnight/month. Look in the pantry, fridge and freezer to see what ingredients and meals you have and ask yourself "what can I make with it?".
You might think it takes ages to come up with a meal plan, but really it shouldn't take more than 10 or 15 minutes as you write out your shopping list. Work out what you're going to eat every day, incorporating the ingredients you already have. Stick it to the fridge or the pantry door and check it each morning. Half the battle of getting a meal on the table is won if you know what you have to prepare. And, knowing ahead that you have a meal planned really does stop those 5 o'clock "I can't be bothered cooking" moods.
Menu planning can and will save you a small fortune - with fish and chips for four costing around $27, or pizza about $22.50, knowing you can put a meal on the table in under 30 minutes can save you between $15 - $20!
Challenge yourself to whip up a banquet with leftovers and food that's close to going off. Remember to understand what the different food labels mean too - so you don't throw away things that are still perfectly useable.
6. On the Menu with Anne
Mum's Spaghetti and Meatballs
This is just one of the many recipes in the Recipe File. It has become a favourite in our house because it's not only tasty, but really, really quick. Tea can be on the table in less than 30 minutes!
Ingredients:
500g beef mince
2 large eggs
1/3 cup minced fresh basil leaves
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs (add Italian seasoning or mixed herbs to crumbs)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
olive oil
1 jar pasta sauce
500g spaghetti
Method:
Cook spaghetti according to directions on packet. In a medium bowl, combine mince, basil, eggs, cheese, bread crumbs, salt and pepper until well mixed. In a large frying pan heat 1/4-inch olive oil. Roll teaspoons of meat mixture into balls, and add to hot oil in batches. Fry 3 to 4 minutes, turning until meatballs are brown. Move meatballs to a paper towel on a plate to drain when they are done. When all the meatballs are cooked, add spaghetti sauce to fry pan. Put meatballs into spaghetti sauce and heat. Serve over cooked spaghetti.
This week we will be eating:
Friday: Soup and toasted sandwiches
Saturday: Hamburgers
Sunday: Roast chicken, baked vegetables, gravy, beans
Monday: Curried beef casserole and rice
Tuesday: Corned beef, mashed potato, cabbage, carrots, white sauce
Wednesday: Kransky, potato bake, cabbage
Thursday: Corned beef pie
In the fruit bowl: oranges, apples, kiwi fruit
In the cake tin: Tea cake, chocolate cupcakes, lemon ginger slice

7. The $300 a Month Food Challenge with Wendy
The $300 a Month Food Challenge
Sticking to $300 a month for food might seem like an impossible amount for some families. That's ok. We all have our own food budgets that we feel comfortable with. My food budget is under $300 for the month because that's all we can afford and that's all we need to feed us well.
One way to reduce your food budget without compromising on quality is to buy brand name items on special. Most branded items come on sale at some time. Some of them come on sale every 4 or 6 weeks while others like soups will be more of a seasonal sale item.
Checking catalogues on a regular basis is a great starting point. If you see something on sale that you would normally use, ask yourself these questions before you buy-
* Do I normally use this item?
* How many can I use within a good time frame?
* Is this a good price or is there a better sale price?
* How many can I store?
* How many can my budget afford?
A good sale price (for me) is 30 - 50 % off. When the sale is this good I'll clear out the supermarket shelf. I can do this because I always have spare money in my food slush fund especially for this purpose.
If you don't have a food slush fund yet, see if you can buy an extra one or two items. Then when you go shopping next time you can cross that item off your list. This will free up some money to buy a different item on sale. Then the cycle begins. Your food spending will gradually decrease as you shop the sales. Before you know it you'll be buying everything on sale and that $300 a month target will get closer.
Do you shop the sales?
What you do buy a lot of on sale?
Have a great week and BE ENCOURAGED!!!!!

Platinum Cheapskates Club members have their very own Cheapskating blogs, and they are wonderful and inspirational and encouraging and even funny. This week's featured blog is written by cutegroomz.
Taschi's Choice
I have been, up until recently, buying 'Earths Choice' products for my business. Today I filled the empty spray bottles with the Cheapskates Pre-wash stain removing spray and the Extra Strength multipurpose cleaner. I have renamed the bottles "Taschi's Choice' (my nickname).
My boys have been laughing at me 'blogging' every time I'm on the computer but they certainly haven't complained about the homemade snacks that I have made for at home and the lunch boxes....except my husband; he's thinks he's putting on weight because homemade is a lot more filling. I have started making portions smaller and they haven't seemed to notice.
At first I felt like I was lost in a fog, unable to work anything out. So I started with my strengths I like cooking and baking so I stepped out of my regular cooking and tried new things. This week I'm trying two more cheaper meals on my unsuspecting males. I have tried three different slices and four different biscuits; I have had to print biscuit recipes off because my son has been sharing the biscuits with his friends at school. Thank you for the shared recipes ladies.
The cleaning came next; first washing powder and stain remover for my clothes. That sorted, I am now cleaning the whole house with Cheapskate cleaners, and vinegar (buying a lot of), bi-carb, ammonia and eucalyptus are my basis of cleaners. My laundry had never looked so tidy without all the different coloured bottles of expensive cleaners.
Now comes the shopping lists and buying every two weeks instead of every couple of days. My cupboard is full of savings brands but my shopping bill has already gone down, now to fine tune it and make it a common reality.
My bills are slowly being sorted out so I am putting a little away each week to get to a place of having the money there ready for when they come in.
The bills are my biggest project as I am sure with most people but I am positive.
I actually feel more energised about everything because it feels like the wheels are finally starting to turn and I am actually heading out of the Cheapskates Station with all the information on board and ready to implement.
WOO HOO.
