Hello Cheapskaters,
Merry Christmas!
It's officially Christmastime, and I've been waiting to wish you all a very merry Christmas season.
If you followed the Own Your Christmas Challenge, you're sitting back relaxing, knowing everything is done, and best of all - OWNED!
Our trees are up, the wreaths are on the doors, the lights have been strung on the verandah. Thankfully I made the Christmas cakes a few weeks ago, because the oven isn't working. We have new ovens coming, but I'm not sure they'll be in before Christmas, so any "baking" I do for now will be no-bake. And that's just fine- this time of year who needs to heat up the house with the oven on?
Have a great week everyone,
Happy Cheapskating,
Cath

A MOO Treatment for Strong Nails
Pour a quarter of a cup of olive oil into a small jug. I use a Tupperware jug with a lid. Warm the oil in the microwave for 45-50 seconds. Place one hand (up to the first joint on the fingers) in the jug and soak for five minutes. Wrap that hand in a hand towel and then reheat oil again and repeat process with the other hand. After soaking each hand individually, then wipe excess oil from fingers, but not nails. When completed put lid back onto jug and store in the fridge. I usually keep it for about 6 months and then it is discarded and I start on a fresh batch of olive oil. Rest hands while watching your favourite tv show, then off to bed. That’s it. In the morning your nails will feel great and gently file them into shape required. If you do this treatment twice weekly, your nails will be strong shiny and enviable.

Simple, Tasty Salad Dressing
I don't have a fridge full of ready-made dressings, it's easy to grow your own herbs (e.g. Basil) and add them to different oils and vinegars to create tasty salad dressings. My favourite is macadamia oil, apple cider vinegar, a squeeze of lemon juice, garlic, basil and black pepper. I use this dressing on coleslaw and pasta salad..... no accurate measurements, just mix it up to your taste... mayonnaise, Dijon mustard & a touch of horseradish sauce. It's delicious, cheap and easy to whip up when you need it.

Socks Drive Me Crazy
Socks drive me crazy! The missing sock; one sock that falls down constantly; one pair of the socks needing darning; sorting socks; an overflowing sock draw with unmatched socks...you get the drift.......
My husband and kids use socks daily. Frustrated, this is what I did. When my husband was needing more work socks, we went shopping to Big W pre Father's Day when I knew the socks were on sale. My husband chose his favourite black ones for work (he'd already had a pack of these previously). I bought 6 packets (I know, financial budgeting was needed). They were all the same - colour, size and pattern. I bagged up his few well-worn old ones that he was still wearing and removed them from his sock draw for now - when these new socks get down to a few, i'll bring that stash back out before purchasing a stock again
My time wasted searching and sorting his socks dissipated! The world was so much brighter. His socks were easy to sort, if one was lost, albeit temporarily, it wasn't long before this one could be paired up with another lost (or worn out) sock. It has been a financial coupe and I am now one much more happier Home Manager (I did this with the boys as well - they like the smaller anklet socks, so their socks were white with different logos each). Sorting and coping with a temporary missing sock or two became a breeze.
I realise initially the outlay is more, but my time chasing missing socks and rummaging through our odd sock draw is non-existent. Sorting socks is a pleasure. I win, through time, and financially in the long run. I would recommend you all doing this - you probably already do it - i just wished I'd been doing it for years earlier then I'd have been one less grumpy, frazzled House Manager.

6. The $300 A Month Food Challenge
Generosity and the $300 a Month Food ChallengeWe are moving into that time of year where we need to stretch our grocery budgets to cover all the yummy treats we indulge in, while also being hounded (and I say that with love - but honestly everywhere I turn someone is almost begging for something) to give. It could be toys, or clothing or food, but the pleas for generosity are out there.
When you're on the $300 a Month Food Challenge you may think you can't afford to be generous. After all, you have your family to feed and that $300 only goes so far.
But you can be generous, especially at this time of year when charities are crying out for help.
One of the secrets to surviving on the $300 a Month Food Challenge is to double-up. That simply means when something we need or use comes on half-price sale, we buy at least two. If you do this, then you'll have at least one spare that you can give.
For example, last week tinned tomatoes were on half-price at Woolworths. I bought 12 for the price of 6, doubling the value for money. It also means that I have some to put into the hampers we give at Christmas, without it impacting on our grocery budget.
Another way to give is to go through your pantries. Remember, not all pantries are for food. If you have a good toiletries pantry/stockpile, go through it and donate one or two items.
