MOO Flavoured Coffee Syrups
Are you a fan of flavoured coffee? Vanilla? Caramel? Perhaps hazelnut or chocolate? They're all good, and can take an average coffee and make it good, add your favourite syrup to your favourite espresso blend and you have a great coffee.
Coffee syrups don't come cheap. Aldi sell them once or twice a year as a special buy for around $4 a bottle. You can buy them in some supermarkets for upwards of $6 a bottle. Specialty coffee shops charge will almost bankrupt you (well maybe not bankrupt you, but it will hurt) with syrups starting at $8 a bottle.
But did you know you can make your own flavoured coffee syrup, and for a fraction of the cost of buying it (even from Aldi)?
A 500ml bottle of basic syrup will cost 70 cents.
The cost obviously increases, depending on the flavourings you add.
But, even with the most expensive flavourings, your 500mls coffee syrup will be a whole lot cheaper than buying it.
Basic Coffee Syrup
Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1 cup water
Method:
Bring sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring constantly. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Turn heat down and simmer 5 minutes, the mixture will start to thicken. Remove from heat. Allow to cool slightly. Add flavourings and bottle in hot, sterilised bottles.
Vanilla Syrup: Add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Peppermint Syrup: Add 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
Cinnamon Syrup: Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar to saucepan when cooking. After removing from heat add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Chocolate Syrup: Add 1 cup cocoa to the saucepan with the white sugar and water. Cook as directed. Remove from heat and add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.
Hazelnut Syrup: Roast 150g blanched hazelnuts. Allow to cool and then crush with a rolling pin. Replace white sugar with 200g brown sugar and 2 tablespoons honey. Add to water and bring to boil, stirring until the brown sugar and the honey have dissolved. Add nuts. Bring mixture back to the boil. Keep the mixture boiling and continue to stir for 5 minutes. Reduce heat and allow to simmer until mixture has reduced by a third - approximately 10 - 15 minutes. Strain, cool and bottle.
