Free Foxtel Installation and Plan Upgrade for the Asking
Approximate $ Savings: $100
I rang Foxtel asking if I am eligible for any rewards after being a member for three years. I enquired about IQ and am now getting it installed without paying the $100 installation fee. I only have to pay $2.50 per week for the IQ.

Cheaper FOXTEL - Three Ways to Save Thousands!
1. My hubby too likes the expensive sports channels, for $9 a month extra we added 10gb downloads onto our broadband plan. Now he can watch all the sport he wants online - either on the laptop, or by using the Wii he can watch on the TV. Saves $120 a month on Foxtel. And we have not yet run out of GB. Ask for a 'shaped' plan and you cannot be charged excess usage fees!
2. My kids (nine, eleven, thirteen and fifteen) like to watch the new release movies. We get Bigpond movies (you can also try Quickflix or Movieguys etc). This gives us 10 new releases, or sometimes an old favourite or a TV show - your choice, for $19.95 a month. This price includes postage both ways, and no due dates or fines EVER. Saving around $1000 a year in my house. (save $5 per movie x 120 movies, plus petrol, impulse buys at the video store, and of course the late fines...). On Foxtel new movies cost around $8 each on top of your $120 a month, and you only watch them once for that!
3. Have you got High Definition Digital TV? For a one off fee of $90 (set top box) we get eight extra channels free to air, and we live in the country. Well worth it. Kids love GO and SBS3. I like ABC2 and Prime HD. ONE is the sports channel and it's free. Something for everyone. (When we got this we found we didn't need the new aerial which we were quoted $300 for, another Saving.)

Call and Ask for a Better Deal
Call and speak to the people at Foxtel and let them know you're struggling at present. They may be able to work out a package or price for you that is less than you are currently paying. I'm with Austar and they have on occasion matched the latest deal going around which has saved money. Also, cancel the magazine subscription - it's only a few dollars every month but is pointless as there is a TV Guide on the box!

Watch the Game on a Big Screen TV for Free!
Send hubby off to the local pub or club for a couple of hours each week to watch his game - most pubs, clubs, etc. have a big screen TV somewhere in the corner showing sports 24/7. Only do this if he's not going to spend all the money you've saved on beer while he's there!

Three Ways to Watch Sport on TV - Without Paying!
Ask a friend with Foxtel to record the games you want, find something you can do in return....give them home grown herbs or pick up kids from school on occasions? The second thing is TIVO! If you are a house that spends money on DVDS, TIVO will save you money in the long run. Record what you want (easily) and never rent a DVD again! We bought ours with Flybuy points...we had minimal points and never got around to using them so it ended up being free!!! Lastly- have you checked out channel 10's digital channel? It is a sports channel for free and you may find your husband is pleasantly surprised.

Watch Footy on Dedicated Digital TV Channels
If you have a digital set up box or a TV that's ready for digital TV, on channel 50 there is a dedicated sports channel. Not sure how much AFL is on there but I am sure there would be a lot!

Optus Over Foxtel
Try Optus pay TV. We pay $109. per month and have everything on it. You can cut out programs you don't need or would not watch, like kids programs, and it would b a bit cheaper. All programs come through Foxtel. Hope this helps.

Plenty of Footy on Free-to-air TV
I suggest to look at this website which lists the viewing times on TV of AFL. There are plenty of games on free to air. www.afl.com.au

Record the Game, Watch at Leisure
The best way for you to watch AFL, is to buy a DVD Recorder, and record the programs that you cant watch live. Then play them back when it suits you. Just make sure you buy a good brand with a good warranty. Don't believe what the salesmen tell you, do some research on the forums as to which is the best, and importantly, easy to use.

Basic Optus Cheaper than Foxtel
I have been using Optus Basic Cable TV for years and have found it is less expensive than Foxtel. Optus has the AFL included on their Sports channel. I pay $58 per month, however, I think it will sometime this year increase but I feel confident it will stay competitive. Enjoy!

Join the Interstate Supporters Club for Your Team
My husband and I both barrack for an out of our State AFL team, love our footy and definitely on one wage cannot afford Foxtel etc. We found that there is an Interstate Supporters Club affiliated to our team and they have get togethers within our State for followers to watch the game together - either at a pub ( and we sip on Cokes)or at someone's place. The 'special' times are when we use up some of our Cheapskate savings and find a motel (cheap one) with Fox Footy, pack our own cool drinks and nibbles etc and watch our footy team play as well as a 'night' out from home- Whoohoo!

Watch Sport Free at the Club
Try the nearest club/pub - they always have Foxtel sports on in the bar areas - on the big screen too!

Switch to Digital TV Now
Digital TV is upon us and if you don't have it yet you'll be forced too by next year. Free Digital TV offers many more channels than regular free to air. Your husband might not always get to view the games he wants to but he will probably get more access than he had before Foxtel. Also, for important games, he can watch them at friends houses who may have Foxtel, make it a social event. Contributed by Rachael Campbell, 15th April 2010
