Tip Store: Garage Sales/Trash'n'Treasure Markets: Shopping
Garage Sales - Saturday Mornings - In Any Area Where People Live!
The ultimate Cheapskating tip is.... garage sales! There is no limit to the savings when you shop at garages sales. Clothes are the biggest saving, as most have them really, really cheap (and they are the most plentiful item usually). I have picked up heaps of really nice clothes and shoes in the past for about $1 an item (and some of these still have tags attached). Then there are always plenty of books, CDs and games for entertainment. Bedding, furniture, electrical goods, kitchenware etc for the house. Tools for outside. There are plenty of excellent bargains to be had - all you have to do is go! Obviously you can pick and choose, and there will be a few grungy ones, but there are plenty of great ones too. And garage sales are generally cheaper than op shops (and have better condition stuff too!). Check in the local paper under Classifieds, also websites like Trading Post and egaragesales have garage sales listed. There are usually lots on Saturday morning - but be there on time, as the best stuff goes quickly!!

Become a Great Garage Sailor
Approximate $ Savings: hundreds
I've recently become a great garage-sailor! I have been able to re-furnish my house and kitchen for hundreds to thousands less than I would have paid in a shop - and helped to reduce landfill at the same time. The keys are to have a budget amount of how much you want to spend in total and individually on each item, a list of items you need/want, get up early on a Saturday to circle and plan your garage sale route and practice your bargaining skills! Moving sales are always the best, because people want to get rid of things and will often throw in a few extra items if asked or sell really cheap if you ask - and always ask! If you have children, there are so many items that are outgrown so quickly they are practically new.

Get Up Early and Catch a Boot Load of Bargains
Approximate $ Savings: $100's
Every Sunday morning, for those who can bounce out of bed early - around 7.30 am - and get down to your local car boot sales that are held every week. People clean out their houses and sheds and sell anything from designer baby clothes, books, paintings, china, fruit, DVDs... pretty much anything you could look at walking around a home. The exciting thing is clothes are all under a few dollars, books are usually no more than a couple of dollars, you also find things that are no longer in the stores and the bargains are amazing... often one of a kind! With four young children, I find 50 cent t-shirts and clean $2 toys and books a real relief... I have been going for many years... People simply have things that they no longer want despite often good condition, but they are not willing to just throw such things away. Are you willing to catch them? You will save hundreds of dollars or more!!!! You truly will be amazed at what you find and how much you will spend! Even if I was a millionaire, I would always take advantage of these wonderful markets.
