Challenge Your Kids
Set them a goal to work out some ways to earn money themselves so they can either save it or spend it on the things they want to do. They can go through and find things in their rooms they no longer want and learn how to sell them on ebay. Offer their services doing things like babysitting, mowing lawns, ironing etc. Or they could even go out and get a job. What a great way to start the year. It will also help them to learn the value of money. They will be more hesitant to spend their hard earned cash.

Check Locally for Holiday Amusements
Check with your local council/library as they usually have a variety of free/low cost activities designed for children of all ages. Also, most churches have youth groups which would have organised activities for minimal cost, and the PCYC (police & citizens youth club).

Different Activities Keep Them Busy
You could hire a few DVD's, go on a picnic but it would more fun if there's a duck pond near by, go swimming at a beach or lake, a biscuit cooking day, there's horse riding or fishing. There's a few ideas.

Card Games for the Whole Family
Playing cards can be a great way for any aged kids (or adults) to spend their holiday time. Spend $10 on a couple of packs and about the same on a book of rules for various games and within no time they'll be playing 500, Canasta, Knaves, Hearts, Spades, Gin Rummy etc in groups of 2-6 or more.

Adopt a Senior
Depending on the teenagers, if they like board games they could visit a retirement village and play cards, chess and scrabble with some clever seniors one day. Finding walking trails around your area is great fun and educational if you have list of things to find and tick off. \
