The Treasure Hunt
I have a technique to get what I want, and save money, that I call "Treasure Hunt." I use the treasure hunt whenever I want to buy something that I don't need right away but that I still want.
For example, I wanted a baker's rack for my kitchen. I searched for several months until I found exactly the one I wanted at a shop that was closing down. The price was $29.95 slashed from $89.95 - quite a saving, achieved just by being patient!
Yet another time I wanted a new lounge suite for my family room. I knew what I wanted, so again I patiently searched, and after three months, I found a beautiful three piece, suite with recliners, in just the right shade of blue, at a warehouse clearance centre for $700. They had it marked as soiled and damaged, but it was sparkling clean and the damage was easy to repair - the lining underneath had come undone, so some thread, an upholstery needle and five minutes it right up - and saved us $1,000.
I have dozens of examples, but basically, the way that treasure hunt works is by being patient and by searching everywhere. This includes op shops, garage sales, discount stores, outlets, Facebook and even telling friends that you're looking for something asking them to let you know if they have one they'd like to move on, or if they hear of someone else who does.
By asking around and letting people know what I am looking for I have been given a beautiful white brass bed and ends for my daughter, a lovely colonial style dressing table for her, two bedside tables that are in my bedroom, an almost new desk for my boys, bikes, toys, clothes, a washing machine, a deep freezer, a lawn mower, curtains, even plush pile carpet!
And all for FREE!
Fall in love with the thrill of the hunt, get what you want and keep more money in your savings account.
