Vacuum Sealer Product Review: Save money, time and energy and reduce food waste

A food vacuum sealer is one kitchen appliance that will be used - over, and over, and over again. It won't sit in the cupboard, gathering dust and wasted.

This appliance will save you money, time and energy in the kitchen. It will go a long way to putting a stop to food waste and throwing money in the bin.

  • Extends freshness of foods by up to 5 times
  • Prevent waste by stopping freezer burn on frozen foods

Where to Buy

At the time of writing, Sunbeam Foodsavers are available from:
  • most good department stores;
  • The Good Guys for $229;
  • Sunbeam for $299;
  • Harvey Norman for $228;
  • Myer $299.

Prices vary, so shop around and check the Sunbeam

Bags

Lastly, the bags. The bags and/or rolls to make your own (which I recommend - you can cut them to size, wasting less). The Sunbeam rolls are expensive, at $39.95 for two.

You can also source bags and rolls online, where you'll also find the rolls are bigger (up to 10m in length), but you need to factor in the cost of postage.

Personally I use the rolls from Aldi (available as a special buy twice a year) for $14.95 for 2 x 5 metre rolls.

When you are sourcing your bags and rolls, make sure they are:
  • BPA free
  • food safe
  • boilable

Overall Thoughts

Over the years I've vacuum sealed hundreds of kilos of meat and chicken, casseroles, pastries, soups, meals, even prepped veggies for the fridge.  Bulk flour and pasta have been portioned into pantry sizes and vacuum sealed for long term, pest free storage in the pantry.

The convenience of being able to store food, safely, long term is priceless.

If you are in the market for a vacuum sealer, my first recommendation would be the Sunbeam Foodsaver VS7800, but it is expensive. I couldn’t find much difference in performance between the Ambiano and the Food Vacuum Sealer apart from price (the Kmart unit is around $11 cheaper) and the locking mechanism.

If you are serious about preserving food by vacuum sealing, then you won't regret buying the Sunbeam Foodsaver, even if you need to wait and save.
