nspire Grocery Savings with Meal Creativity
Like many people, I struggled to convince my husband that we could reduce our grocery cost without reducing our enjoyment of mealtimes! But now I've discovered that by using a bit of creativity and presenting meals decoratively he doesn't even notice! For example, instead of presenting 2 minute noodles with leftover veggies for dinner I now cut and arrange all our different vegetables nicely (making a lovely little carrot rose etc.) and call it "ultimate ramen" - it's low-cost, nutritious and usually vegetarian. Best of all, though, he loves it!

Electronic Envelope System
I have bank accounts set up for monthly bills, transport costs, savings and quarterly bills. These also act as offset accounts on my mortgage. When our main wage comes into our account, I transfer the set amounts to their accounts and I always have enough to cover our bills (with no real thought). I also have an account our grocery/miscellaneous money goes to. This has helped us to pay less interest on our mortgage and also to be more deliberate with our grocery money. I know many people use the paper envelope system, but at our stage of life we’ve found this electronic version so helpful.

Pre-Wash Shower Cleaner
I don't remember where I saw this, but I'm so happy I tried it. Aldi DI-SAN Pre Wash Stain Remover in 500ml trigger spray, I think it cost $1.29, to remove water marks on shower door. I tried for 12 years to remove the watermarks on the shower door, but although my scrubbing and wiping helped, the stains were still there, until I tried this spray. I don't remember if it worked the first time, but after the second time, I was very impressed, all stains have disappeared, leaving a crystal clear shower door. I had cleaned the door weekly, more if I had visitors, for 12 years, with no real difference, but the change is astounding. I have never left a remark before, I have just read everyone's' tips, but I just had to say thank you to whoever or where ever I read this.

3. This Week's Winning Tip
This week's winning tip is from Margaret Wicks. Margaret has won a one year Platinum Cheapskates Club membership for submitting her winning tip.
Three Simple Ways to Save on Printer Ink
I was using a lot of ink for my family so found 3 solutions that saved me a lot of money. My printer was a coloured inkjet and it certainly chewed up the ink especially for the children.
Firstly I set the printer to default to back and white only. That meant that unless I changed it to colour, it saved a lot of ink for non necessary printing.
Secondly, I ordered replacement ink online from inkstation.com.au this site have reduced price inks that are compatible with most printers. There is often an introductory offer as well which can save you more. This was a saving of over 60% on the usual cost.
While these things helped, I then did a cost analysis and realised that it would be be cheaper in the long run to buy a black and white laser printer to use for all but necessary coloured printing.
This did mean an initial outlay for the new printer however the ink is much more cost effective, it only needs replacing after 5000 pages and the cost of the replacement ink is a fraction of the cost of the inkjet ones.
This means that everyone prints on the laser printer and I have the inkjet printer and scanner for only when needed, reducing my ink purchases drastically.
By doing all these things, I do not feel I need to restrict the family from printing and this has been particularly helpful during schooling from home.
Congratulations Margaret, I hope you enjoy your Cheapskates Club membership.

5. On The Menu
Cheesy Filled & Grilled Quesadillas
This recipe makes one delicious quesadilla, just enough for a lunch. Add a big green salad and it becomes a hearty dinner. I use low fat cheese and leftover cooked chicken or beef to make it an economical and slightly more healthful Mexican treat. Quesadillas are the perfect meal in a hurry. Keep tortillas in the freezer and you can have a meal on the table in just a few minutes.
Ingredients:
2 small tortillas
1/4 cup sliced olives
1/4 cup chopped cooked chicken or beef, shredded
1/2 cup low fat cheese, grated
2 tbsp tomato salsa, drained
Method:
Heat a heavy griddle or fry pan over a medium heat. While the griddle is heating, put the olives, chicken or beef, cheese and salsa in a bowl and toss together. Spray one side of each tortilla with cooking spray. When griddle is hot, lay one tortilla on grill, sprayed side down. Spread filling mixture over the tortilla and cover with the other tortilla, sprayed side up. Cook 3 - 4 minutes, or until cheese has started to melt, and you get nice grill marks, then flip and cook other side for another 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the pan. Cut into wedges and serve with taco sauce, guacamole or another favorite dipping sauce.
This makes 1 quesadilla – double, triple, or quadruple for more servings.
Next week we will be eating:
Sunday: Roast Beef
Monday: Party Food - Birthday Dinner
Tuesday: Spag Bol
Wednesday: Chicken Casserole, rice
Thursday: MOO Pizza
Friday: Butter Chicken, Rice, Naan
Saturday: Cheesy Filled & Grilled Quesadillas
In the fruit bowl: oranges, mandarins, bananas

6. The $300 A Month Food Challenge
Fitting Your Grocery Shopping Into the $300 a Month Food Challenge
Before you start to panic, and think you can't do it, stop! There are a couple of things you need to understand:
1. Of course you can get your grocery budget down, you started to work on it last week. Grocery budgets will always be a work in progress, so you are most likely still working on finding your ideal .
2. The $300 a month is for a family of four. If you are a family of five, up the limit to $375 a month - that's what it would be for my family. If you are a family of three, drop it down to $225 a month - stop hyperventilating, it can be done!
Once you've reached your ideal grocery budget you'll want to stick to it. It's quite easy, and you most likely know how to do it, you just need a gentle reminder.
1. Use what you have before you buy more. This will stop waste and save you tossing money into the bin.
2. Plan your meals - see use what you have above. Meal planning doesn't need to be complicated, just a list of meals you can create with the ingredients you already have is perfect.
3. Write a shopping list, putting on just the things you need, in the quantities you need. Check for half-price deals and cheaper brands and make a note on your shopping list. Tally the total and if it is over your budgeted amount, look for where you can trim it. Don’t be afraid to try generics or different brands if they are cheaper - if you don't like them you can always go back to your regular brands and buy on sale.
4. Go shopping, buying just what is on the list. Do not be tempted to add anything. Don't get sidetracked by the special and sale signs. Skip the aisles that don't have anything on your list. Aim to get in and out in 20 minutes or less (and yes, even doing a monthly shop for a family it can be done).
5. Unpack and put away as soon as you get home, then start a new shopping list. Keep it somewhere you can add to it as soon as you see a gap in the pantry.
That's it - simple and just a commonsense plan that anyone can follow.

9. Last Week's Question
Last week's question was from Christine, who is looking for the cheapest printer ink as now she has children remote schooling, they are going through a lot with all the printing required.
This was such a timely question, with so many working from home, and homeschooling children, that I just knew Cheapskaters would have the answer - or answers! So many great replies to Christine's question, but by far Inkspot seems to be the recommended source for budget friendly printer inks, although as you'll see below, there are plenty of other solutions, with more in the Tip Store.
Denise Phillips answered
I have an Epson Photo RX430 and I buy my ink cartridges from Ink Station (Ph 1300655943 or Inkstation.com.au). There are discounts when you buy packs and free postage when you spend a certain amount. I generally get them within a couple of days after ordering. I've been very happy with them.
Fran Green answered
Hi Christine, I have an Epson Workforce printer; Cartridge world sells generic brand cartridges and will take my empty cartridges and refill them, they sometime even give me a discount. Much cheaper than office supply stores.
Fay Herrmann answered
The best prices for any ink cartridges is on Ebay - usually free post and are less than $1 each. If you have a colour printer be sure to get packs that include extra black cartridges as these will be the first to run out. Cartridges have chips. Home refilling of cartridges is not worthwhile. You can continue to print even if printer indicates to replace and get every drop of ink - an option if you don't require high quality print. Claims by manufacturers that only their brand inks should be used is dubious! When empty take cartridges to Post Office for recycling.
Judith Lowe answered
For many years I have bought ink cartridges from inkstation.com.au. They have the branded products also the much cheaper generic "compatible" versions which I always buy and have never had any problem with. From time to time they have specials on with a decent discount (15 to 20%). Order one day and they usually arrive the next day, (day after at the latest) beautifully packed and secure. I would definitely recommend checking them out next time you need ink.
Jess Vozzo answered
You can usually buy generic ink cartridges online that will fit your printer.
Don't be tempted to buy too much to avoid the delivery fee unless you will use it all within 12 months -- ink cartridges can dry out and you'll have wasted your money -- instead, see if your friends and family want some too!
Lastly, I will add that often you can buy whole new printers for as cheap as $30, but these are poor value as the ink for these printers is very expensive! Read reviews online before you buy a printer and invest in a good one that will last longer and has reasonably priced cartridges that you can buy from many places for a long time.
Bill Garlick answered
I always buy my Epson ink cartridges from LT Trading at 4/1 Bungalen Ct Dandenong South. 97682818. I always buy their generic brand and each cartridge (my printer takes 4) costs $5.00 each. Never had a problem with them.
